You could mod them with a cutter or leave them as is. I would try them as they are first and go from there.
You could raise the charcoal grate by buying Weber charcoal rails and adding a second charcoal grate on top of that.

It's been a while, just reporting back to say I sold the gas bbq and bought some craycort grates instead. I do like cooking on craycorts but I'm undecided if I think they're worth it.
Good product, on th expensive side. Iron cast is OVER RATED in my opinion and on top of it they need to be babied! I have some cast iron grates from my previous grill but to be honest I used them every so often. I also have a cast iron pan and that I find its worth to have.. U can cover and entire surface with it...but also needs to be babied.
Yea, it pains me to shell out so much for ci.
but if I need it for some odd reason I just throw a ci grate from another grill on top of the std grate. My lodge hibachi grate is a great example.
I like using my GrillGrates!! Great grill marks if I wish, and can always flip them over for a nice sear. Light, easy to handle, and you never have to worry about them rusting, maintenance is a breeze.
