Thermoworks Smoke X2 and Billows

I guess Thermoworks does not make the smoke x2 anymore. My wife is getting me some billows. I am on the fence on this setup. so I see smoke x2 on ebay for like 100 dollars. Not sure I am ready to go to the x4. Or RFX.

Can someone confirm that X2 works with the billows?

It should. I'd confirm with TW support which was really helpful. Last time I had a question I used their chat and had a real person not an Ai BOT.

I found my ad blocker blocked chat and reviews on their site so if you use one, you may want to pause it on their site.

SmokeX, Signals and RFX work with Billows

SmokeX4 is $129 and includes 2 additional probes - I don’t believe the remote display is any larger than the X2
Signals is $159 with 4 probes (note: current pricing on TW site)

X2 would only have ambient and 1 temp and no options to add additional probes later

I think you should upgrade to the X4 - you can choose to use as many probes as u want

Signals and RFX might be better depending if you wanted graphing or remote monitoring

I use X2 with Billows. Works totally fine.

One probe for the ambient temp, one for the meat.

I wouldn't use two extra probes even if I had the X4. Often I just use the air probe to run the fan and keep it simple.

I check meat temps with a hand held digital thermometer. Easier than messing with all of those hot tangled wires snaking around the grates.

If you get the billows, I recommend buying the $2.99 damper. IMO they should include it with the Billows. Without it there may be too much free flowing intake air through the billows. Probably depends on what you are using. If it is a WSM, maybe this isn't needed. It is absolutely needed for efficient smokers like a WSK or a BGE.

Some other comments on the billows. I've used it most on my large BGE and a few times on the WSK, and now I will only bother using it for overnight cooks to provide low-temp insurance.

In short, what I'm saying is I don't use it for temperature "control" I use it a safety net.

I set it the pit up with the Billows attached, but without the fan plugged in. I stabilize the pit temp, add the meat and again stabilize pit temp without using the fan. After the pit temp is stable, I plug the billows into the controller and set target pit temp 5 to 10 degrees the current pit temp. What this means is the fan will not run unless the pit temp drops. Since the BGE and the WSK are very stable with temps it means unless I've messed up the fan will not run at all and I can easily sleep through the night and not be bothered with a low-pit-temp alarm.

I've done this for overnight brisket and overnight pork shoulder and not once has a low-pit-temp alarm gone off.

As far as the X2 vs X4, I use all four ports and I'll put a probe in each hunk of meat being smoked.
