Thermometer Probes

Does anyone know whether or not thermometer probes from the same manufacturer are interchangeable? What about between manufacturers?

IME probe wires and probes are not created equal. Even if the plugs are identical and the wires appear to be undamaged, I've found that mixing probes between brands of thermometers does not work.

Recently the wife hid my probes (that's my story and I'm stickin' to it . . . even though I can hide my own Easter eggs and still have a lot of fun huntin' 'em). At the time I had an ET-901 and a cheapo Acu-Rite. I ordered a replacement for the 901. About 10 days later I decided I couldn't make do with just one thermometer because I wanted to monitor chamber temp in a smoker; so I ordered and ET-73. I compared the new probe for the 901 to the meat probe for the 73. They appear to be identical.
Of course, the old probes have been 'found' and I now have 3 that appear identical. So far, I've kept them marked for the unit they came with. I sent a 'contact us' query to Maverick about 10 days ago asking if they are interchangeable, but they have (so far) ignored my question.

Anyone know about these things? I don't think I'll get the Acu-Rite thing confused (in fact I'll probably toss it - or give it to the wife . . . heh heh heh), but I am likely to cross up the probes for the 901 and the 73. I'd really like to know if this will damage anything. I think it unlikely, but I don't have money to waste finding out I'm wrong.

I asked Maverick the same question a couple of weeks ago and they said no they were not compatible. That is the probe from ET-732 won't work on the ET-75
