Thermometer placement

I just order the thermometer for my 22.5 OTR (same as the performer) and would like to know where on the hood should I hard mount it? I know some folks just pop it in the vents but I'd rather have access to the vents all the time. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
 
Don. do a search on the forums. I've seen lots of ideas. I would mimic the newer Performer.
If its good for Weber, it should be good for us.

I put mine right in the middle of the dome. Right next to the grip. It is the highest point and when I do beer can chicken or a Thanksgiving turkey I want to ensure that I have maximum space in the dome, while not favoring one side or the other.

Sounds like it's similar to the newer Performer but a bit higher up. How did you mount it? Basic drill or did you use washers or paint to avoid rusting?
 
I suggest mounting as close to the vent as possible. That way when you are offset indirect cooking you are reading temp where the food is and not where the coals are.
