The cure for high mount vents on a Smokey Joe

Hello all. As I stated in my introduction post, deep in this sub-forum I found a post where a fella used aluminum foil to divert intake air to the bottom of the coal bed. It inspired me to create my own version out 12 oz. soda cans. Hopefully the pictures speak for themselves. Maybe Chris can make it a sticky to help those like myself who discovered a high mount intake Smokey Joe will starve for air if the lid is completely closed. A jumbo joe may need a 16oz. can.

Looks good.

I've wondered if direct contact of burning coal and aluminum will lead to melting and possibly off-gassing. This would take very hot coals and the coals would likely need to be directly in contact with the the diverter.

melting point of aluminum is 1220F, and you'll likely be OK with that setup, but if you could make it out of stainless, it would likely last forever without any risk.
