Temperature Gauge Mod

Before my wife bought me my WSM 22.5" a good friend gave me a Tel Tru thermometer, a real beauty. Not knowing the WSM came with one though, now I have a Tel Tru that is just sitting.

Is the WSM thermometer a good quality thermometer?

IN my experience with Weber therms, I would test the accuracy of both and then use the Tel Tru.
If the Weber proves accurate use it.

Hmmmmmm what kind of answer is that?

Just did a test: The Weber thermometer is off about 7 degrees, it doesn't sit at 0 when resting unlike the Tel Tru.

After I did a boil test the Weber is reading higher. The Tel Tru is marking the same as my Maverick I used as a true reading.

Has anyone had issues with the thermometers?

Just about everyone!!!!
If it is all you have and you know the error factor and can make mental adjustments and really care what the exact temp is, then use the Weber.
If on the other hand you don't really want to do the mental calisthenics, and want a more accurate reading of temps, use a better therm.

Use the Tel Tru.

Weber thermo is wild a lot of the times. Mine ranges from 20-40 degress off some times to accurate at others.

I am replacing my weber therm with a second exhaust vent.

Just about any analog thermo is the same. Although some are better than others.

It would sometimes be easier if they didn't have numbers one them, you just learn the range and go by that, if they're not one that is all over the place.

That said, I have a massive Taylor Weekend Warrior still in the package that's supposed to be really accurate and consistent. Once and if I find where I want to use it, I'll test it against my Maverick pretty extensively.

You can try it.
I have a Tel-Tru mounted in that same location on my 08 WSM and depending on the "mass" of cold meat my temps can run 50-75° cooler than my thermo stuck into the top vent.
Like I said before, I consider it as a $35.00 hood ornament @ that location, maybe if I mounted it more towards the top grate it would be more accurate, I duno, I just stick with the way I started, and that's with a $6.00 turkey fryer therm clipped into the top vent.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.
