Summit

Well hello to everybody. Brand new guy here. I’ve been an old-school original summit fan since 2000 when I bought my 450.I started looking online for the steam-n- chips smoke kit(model#9965). Of course weber doesn’t make this along with many other parts for the old Summit. Tried and tried but could not find one anywhere on any website. But it led me to Letgo which is now Offerup and craigslist. Well guess what, I found a 1999 Weber 625NG with a side burner for $300. It was located 125 miles from my house, real close to where I was stationed in the Navy (Long time ago). So yes I drove and got it ,mostly for the sideburner. This model did not have the stainless steel sides. But it did have a two piece stainless bottom shelf. So I then started looking for stainless steel sides which of course Weber doesn’t make any more. But guess what, I found another 650NG in New Jersey much farther away. This one had the stainless steel sides. And yes, it had the Smokebox. That one cost me $500.
So in my quest to find a smoke box, which ended up costing me $800 I’m all set. Then my wheels started turning. I wanted on my deck, the 650, with the stainless sides, and the side burner, and the smoke box. But living in Rhinebeck New York there’s no such thing as natural gas. Back to the Internet to figure out how to convert to propane. Called Weber, but forget that. Then I found a video on YouTube with no words but somebody demonstrating how to do this. Words popped up where to buy the orifice and where to buy the #62 drill bit. if you go to eBay you can spend up to $100 to buy the proper millimeter orifice. But the YouTube video sent me to (the bbq depot.com)in Hollywood Florida.7 x 6 mm orifice model # 31500 fit. But you have to drill the hole a tiny bit larger with the # 62 drill bit.$2.66 Per orifice X 6 burners,1 side burner=$18.62 plus $8.95 shipping.

Sorry, I know this is a really long post but nobody around here is a fan of 20-year-old grills like me. All 3 Summit’s that I own now, only one has the hinged cooking grate to fill up the smoke box. If I can find 2 more smoke boxes, then I will splurge for the $175 hinged cooking grates. I am still also searching for the extra flip up side burner for boiling water.

Both of the 650s,I completely took every nut and bolt off, sanded the aluminum sides, repainted, pressure washed everything. I also got all new igniters and crossover burner tubes. Everything else on these grills was in excellent shape for being 20 years old. These were hardly used. The whole bottom where the tubes go in are in perfect shape. I know this is where the holes get larger because of the heat, but not these (Yet).

So every morning with my coffee I search the websites for random old summits. Not many show up but occasionally there is one. On that note, if you look at the posts yesterday on a weber summit FT 400. Guess who bought it? Price was way up there but it was non-negotiable. It’s in such pristine shape I’m afraid to cook on it. Did I need a fourth summit-NNNNOOOOO. But I’ve never seen the FT model before. Now I find out there’s an FT 600. Which there is a picture of one on this website. If I ever move to Australia, I know there’s a lot there.

If anybody has a side burner or the 9965 smoke box and wants to give it up let me know. Or an FT 600 I’ll take that. I called Webber to find out the model number or serial number on the side burner for my registered 450(261101). No information. The one I have has a tag on the back but the numbers are gone. Weber should engrave this info into the units they sell.

Well happy grilling everyone. My next post should be one or two lines like everybody else leaves. Ahh, now I see how to take a photo. First picture I’ll send of my modified update at 650,then my blue 450, And yes I’ll tease you guys with the FT 400. The person I got this from removed the post. The other 650 is in the back of my garage so no photos there.

OK,so you know the condiment shelves on the 2000 Summit 450/650 grills? I found two on eBay for $20. So I contacted the seller to see if she had any more parts. Well guess what, All three grates including the hinged one,All flavorizer bars, And yes she had the smoke box minus water pan.And I got the pot holder top as well cause her grill had the side burner. All of that for $100. After several emails back-and-forth I asked where the grill was. Her husband dismantled it and threw it out. She grabbed the few parts that I listed before he got rid of everything else. That whole grill could’ve been put on craigslist easily for $500. I live 1000 miles from there so it wouldn’t have been for me.

Not sure how, but the 650 got two pictures in there. Working on the fifth summit but the price is just too high so far. I’ve been trying to get another one from offer up.It was posted a year ago,so I’m assuming it was sold. I’ve responded 20 times but got no reply. So frustrating, list it as sold or remove it. I’ve tried responding to offer up,but you know how that goes.

welcome i have a 97 450 that i picked up for $75.00 not in bad shape but i need the lower support bar that the door pins go into it is rusted almost in half

I just measured mine,1 1/4 pipe. You could go to the hardware store and buy plumbing pipe. They will cut it to length right there. Problem is the bolts that go through the frame into the pipe won’t have anything to attach to. Here’s a thought, Try a wooden dowel. Not sure they make them that thick. If not go look at shovels and rakes. Find one with a good straight handle and cut it to length. Drill a hole in each end for the bolt and then drill more holes for the door to attach to. You could sand it down and spray paint it black so it would match.

On the summit 650 you can see there is a side burner. Of course the tag on the back has no visible numbers. If anybody knows the model number please let me know. I’ve tried every website known to man. I even called Weber and they couldn’t give me any info. I understand these are not made anymore but if I had a model number I can try to find the rubber bumpers that go in the lid so it makes no sound when it hits the base. Or any other part.

Welcome to the forum John. I picked up my first Summit recently. Still need to install new burners and igniters received from Weber the other day. I believe she is from 2002. Love your Summits...especially the blue one. Here is a pic of my 450:

If you can find your serial number on the sticker, the letters DU before the numbers means 2002. found all the model numbers online somewhere. I believe your grill has the same scale as my FT 400. The movable lever is different than just the regular scale on most of their grills.
I wish I got on board a little sooner with these summits. I missed a 450 close to me for $100. They had the smoke box with the flip up grate, extra burner tubes, and igniters. Also missed out on a built- in 450 for free. I believe he was redoing his whole backyard and got rid of the old island it was in. But I guess I should feel lucky for finding the FT 400.

Hey Kelly, Blue 450 sat on my deck uncovered for 20 years and still looks Great. The blue is slightly faded and I have a rusty ring in condiment tray from something that was left there too long. Still works perfect.

Been awhile.Got myself a 56” Vieluxe grill.I need a thermometer for it.Couldn’t get the wet one off unless I broke it and sawzalled it off.I put a smaller replacement in for now in 2nd photo.

My God, that thing is as long as a bus! It's very cool though. What did it set you back and how many people does it take to move it?

It was just getting dark here so not a great photo. you’ll cry if I tell you what I paid for it (OK)it was $1000.
440 pounds. good thing it has four swivel wheels all stainless steel ,it moves like it weighs 10 pounds. just need a better thermometer and I fixed the rack that holds the flavorizer bars. some of the tabs were broken off that hold the bars. i’ve got several summit 650s that I’m refurbishing and took the bar holders and put them in place. then I put the bars in which were very snug because of the thickness of the bar holder. didn’t drill or weld anything. The bars fit perfectly over the burner tubes. I have a friend that is a great welder who made my summit 650 rotisserie bar 3“longer because this came without one. Im going to have him custom make me half inch wide stainless steel strip that goes under the bar holder to give the bars a place to rest without falling down. hopefully that makes sense. The bar holder is welded in place just like everything else on this grill.
