Summit s-670, smoker box


 
Today I finally fired up the new grill for grilled onions and burgers. I put long-soaked wood chips in the smoker box, and they just incinerated! Had the burner on high, then quickly went to low.
Does anyone have more experience than me, i.e., more than once? Also, I recall a post somewhere when someone ignited the wood in the smoker box, transferred it to a freestanding smoker box, and set that at the opposite end of the grill for a more complete smoke, reloading the 670 box with more chips. any experienced members out there?

I'm pretty new to gas grills. Have a performer that has been my workhorse for years. I wanted a gasser for the incredible convenience after a day at work.
