Summit S-420 Appears to lose heat quickly.

All,

Recently purchased a Summit S-420 and I have to be honest I really like Weber products but a little disappointed. When I lift the hood to oil the grates for example and then close again, the temperature guage drops easily 80 degrees (it appears the stainles steel hood that isn't covered by the heat shield is the culprit) but then regains that temperature within a few moments. However, overall, I can control the heat pretty well at most levels but this seems very starnge. I do notice that the when lifting the hood it is much lighter then lifting a similar hood on an E-420 (I attribute to that one because it is covered by porcelain vs. stainless steel).

Also, the side tables seem to get very hot when cooking (something I didn't experience with my Vermont Castings old grill).

Thoughts? Any advice or is this common? Thanks in advance.

I also have a Summit S-420 and I have observed the same drop in temperatures that you describe. I personally have never worried about it because it recovers within a few minutes and it seems to have absolutely no affect on the cooking itself. I think it has to do more with the positioning of the thermometer. I have never noticed an issue with the side tables heating up. That said, I am sure that the cast aluminum sides retain heat much more than the rest of the hood. Maybe that is what you are experiencing. I will definitely monitor this on mine in the future.

Funny, but I also replaced an old Jenn-Air made by Vermont Castings with the S-420. Great minds think alike.

Thanks Don for the information, greatly appreciated and I agree with your thoughts. I just got my grill a little while ago so still working out the kinks and getting familiar with the grill, I am hoping that I will start to enjoy it more and more. Sounds like your experience overall with the S-420 has been a positive one?

I certainly love mine. I purchased is over a Genesis because I wanted four burners because that is what I was used to using. I swallowed hard at the price, but have never regretted purchasing it. There are a number of things that I prefer making on it over using charcoal such as fish or thin cuts of chicken or pork for salads. I also bake on it from time to time. Have fun and good luck with yours.
