side door sealer

I just received my new 22" WSM and I can already tell I want to seal the side door up better. I was told to get some nomex and some 3M 77 spray to seal it up good. Does that sound like a good idea? Where do I get some nomex?

I don't know if that's really necessary. Spend some time working the soft aluminum with some bending and flexing to make it conform to the body of the WSM better. You should be able to get it to seat against the middle section pretty well. Then, after you've cooked on the WSM five times or so you'll have built up enough natural gunk that things should tighten up on their own.

Your main areas of focus should be the door and then truing up any out of round issues with the charcoal bowl or center section.

Good luck

I agree with Ed. A few minutes of trial fitting will get the door more than good enough. I wouldn't want to use any type of glue material anywhere near the food. Besides, a little smoke getting out is no big deal at all. There's way more than enough inside there to get the flavor into the meat.

I am not worried about smoke getting out. I just want to seal up the air so it only goes in through the vents in the bottom and out through the top vent. It will be much easier to control the temp with less variation.

Nomex is what they use for fireproof suits..right??
Heck I wouldn't know where you could buy a small strip of that to deal with your problem.
Doing a search on sealing an access door resulted in this
It might help you, or not.

That little leak will not affect your ability to control temps. After a couple of smokes, the "goo" will make a natural seal that will let even less smoke out. Totally sealing the door isn't a good idea. It comes in handy for adding more coals during longer cooks.

This is the stuff people use on their BGE's (torched my gasket on my egg during the first pizza cook, no need to replace it though):

Nomex for BGE

I am guessing you want to put the gasket on the outer edge of the door that touches the middle section, and not around the opening? I would think that it would be easier to replace the door over the middle section if there was a problem.
