Not sure if this has been discussed as I have not been on a lot recently, but I just saw the 2013 22"otg at lowes. Weber has added a therm to the lid similar to the 26". I think it is about time that weber made the change. I know it may not be great to the weber purest but than again, the gold ash catcher wouldn't be either.
 
I have the new 22.5 with the thermometer. It's awesome...I can't imagine cooking without a thermometer to have an idea of the inside temps.

would suggest checking the cooking grate temp against the lid temp. this way you know what the food is cooking at. also be carefull where you position the thermometer as that will influence the readings.
 
Here is my two year old OTG and I obviously agree about the thermometer. I think they should also add the insulator to the top vent like the Performer.

Yes you are correct but the therm in my performer helped me learn how to grill with charcoal. It was dips and spikes it helped me monitor. Otherwise I would have probably stayed with gas.
