Redneck wing cooker..........

Problem - I love wings but can't eat just a few so I usually end up cooking LOTS. Flipping individual wings is a pain in the neck so I've devised a solution. I'd like your advice though before I go thru with this. I'm thinking of going to Lowe's and picking up two new 22" WSM cooking grates, 4 carriage bolts, 4 hex nuts, 4 wing nuts and 8 washers (all stainless steel of course). My plan is to flip one of the grates upside down and stick the 4 carriage bolts up between the bars and placing washers and hex nuts then I want to load my chicken wings, place the other grate down over the bolts and put the remaining washers and wing nuts. Screwing it all together (not so tight as to squeeze the juices out of my chicken) and cooking my wings. When it's time to flip I can flip the whole thing. Will this work? .................I know y'all haven't figured this out yet but I'm a redneck! ha ha. Thanks for any input or advice. Joe

Hey joe. I'm sure you know you can buy rigs that hold multiple wings burgers or hot dogs. Kind of a basket deal with a handle. I got one last summer. Haven't used it yet , but I'm thinking it'll hold at least a dozen wings. Would that not be enough for your purpose?
Not to dump on your idea , but I can see that weber grate and nut/bolt setup being a bear to put together and take apart (HOT)....especially if you got a few beers in ya !
Dont get me wrong , it's a worthwhile idea , I think it just needs some tweaking. Good luck , brother.

Great point. I did think about the heat issue but I have welder gloves and pliers. I have looked at a few of the wing holders but the ones I've found were mostly for small quantities. That would be fine for ME but, as you know, when the wings are cooking people tend to show up ha ha. I'm gonna do a little more research. I looked at the Meadow Creek chicken cookers but hate to but another cooker that isn't gonna perform any better than my WSM or 22" Weber kettle. Thanks for the input Frank.

It should work. The only issues I can think of is the threads getting gunked up with sauce and fat, and as the wings cook they'll shrink, and some might slide out as you flip it over.
I have one of those basket thingies, prolly 16" x 12" and should easily fit 16-20 wings, but I've never used it yet.

From one redneck to another, you might want to try wing nuts instead of just plain nuts. They would be easier to remove when the chicken wings were done. Wing nuts come in stainless steel as well; but I am not certain all the stainless is worth the expense if you scrub the parts off after a cook.

I like your solution but it will be an expensive one. You may just buy some inexpensive grates from Academy Sports (I used them for the 5 mini-WSM'S I made for Christmas gifts). If you left your current grill grate in place, it would not matter if the chicken wing grills were a little too small in diameter to span the opening across the grill opening. Go for it and let us know how it works.

ha ha . It's one of those things you buy and say "this'll be awesome for wings" and there it sits. But I vow that as soon as it warms up a bit I'm going to fire up my WSM bottom jumbo joe style and cook a mess of wings in that gadget. I'll post some pix when I do it.

Lol. It's one of those things my Lady buys me for Fathers day. It hung in the garage for awhile till she made me fell guilty by not using it, so I used it on some fish fillets, but not on wings.
It worked OK, but has a chain-male type of surface which does take some time to clean out all the nooks and crannies.

Just a thought. Use wire or something to create a hing on one side and then you only have to mess with one or 2 bolts to open and close it.

Have u tried The Dougherty Method???

It's so simple it's genius. And pretty badass redneck style cooking in front of your friends. Takes a while tho like 2-3 hours maybe?

Just gotta be careful on the wsm you don't lose em down the handle holes.

I've done 3 family packs on a 22 kettle. One of my favorite is a family pack or two on the top rack of the wsm without the water pan. So straight over the coals. Drinking beer, basting, and knocking em down, and pushing em back in a pile.

Try it Joe!

yes. My thought exactly. One bolt or maybe a U bolt. Wire it in a couple places so it opens like a clam shell.

Thanks Kaz. I never heard of that. Thanks to everyone for your input. I like the thought of using wire because, as every redneck knows, you can fix ANYTHING (except the Obama administration's screw-ups) with bailing wire and duct tape ha ha. What got me thinking was looking at the Meadow Creek chicken cookers. I like the idea but ain't gonna spend that much money if I don't have to.
