I recently purchase this readhead SS performer from CL for $40. Missing lid handle holder? both grates are rusted. 3 ding, two major. comes with a cover. Lid code date is "EI" - 97'. tank is 3/4 full but has MF date of 96'?

I am trying to restore this redhead to it's former glory. I ask Troy for suggestion on repaint on lid. I am not sure what else need attention. Any suggestion, help, comment is welcome.

my 1st question is what to do with the white plastic sheet on the ss lid?

NICE! First the plastic - I would just take it off. I'm guessing that it originally was designed to help keep the storage compartment dry, but mine was shredded more than yours when I bought my 1992 model, so I just took it off. No harm; no foul.

On the paint - you won't be able to paint the whole thing and have it last, even the high temperature stuff - at least I haven't. I just use the highest temperature high-temp paint I can find, in as close a color as I can find, to keep the rusted areas painted and to keep the rust from spreading. I re-touch those spots on mine about once a year.

You're fortunate in that the ash catcher ring and ash catcher appear to be in good shape.

I would clean the lid and bowl, inside and out, as well as you can with some hot soapy water and some plastic abrasive pads, then replace the One-Touch system and get some new grates and fire that baby UP!

Hello Pat,

Thanks for the quick response. which part is considered the one touch system?

Ok, did a search. i see it's call a one touch cleaning system. How can I tell if my needs replacing?

Troy, from another post was saying that his testing on high heat paint has result in at least one paint (hvt??) that is able to hold up to the demand, at least for now. That is where I will start.

So you suggested that i rip all the plastic out and keep it that way?

I have updated my first post with a picture of the underside. I hope it show the one touch system.

Does weber still sell the lid holder?

The one touch is the 3 bladed thing in the bottom of the bowl Yours is bent up and rusted, might as well replace it while you're cleaning everything up. They often rust solid and are hard to take apart without breaking.

And Weber has the lid holder - I just bought one about two months ago.

The cleaning system replacement is about $10 - just get it from Weber when you get the lid holder. They'll help you get the right part numbers.

You may have to use a Dremel cut-off wheel to cut the sweeper handle off of the existing one-touch system - they rust up pretty quickly and you can't un-do the nut holding the sweeper rod in place. Just cut it off right up next to the big nut and the existing one touch system will fall out. You can put the new one in - follow the instructions and pay attention to where the sweeper handle fits in the slot on the ash catcher ring.

Yours has one of the three sweeper wings bent upward just a little - that will make it harder to clean and will make it harder to shut the grill down when you're finished cooking. Its a cheap and easy replacement and I recommend it along with the new grates (from Weber also - they will charge only one flat rate shipping - like about $8 for FedEx ground).

Vincent, you should also be prepared, when your propane tank runs out, to replace it. No reputable propane supplier will refill it, as it is not equipped with an overfill protection device ("OPD"). The tip-off to the tank's obsolescence is the star-shaped handwheel for the tank valve. OPD-equipped tanks have three-sided handwheels on the valve.

Last time I checked (about two years ago), new 5-lb propane tanks ran about $50.

Vincent, nice find. You will have that up and running in no time. You can have it looking like new. If you need help with the cleaning I can send you an older post gets them spotless. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Wasn't sure i had a good deal when I notice the missing handle holder as well as seeing those big dings.

Does weber sell the propane tank? will i also need a hose replacement as well when i get the new tank?

Richard, if you can post link i will be more than happy to take a look or two.

Pat, does those one touch sweeper comes in two type? i seem to recall reading here that one was stainless steel and the other is aluminum?

Currently I have my 08' e320 from CL as well for $40 taken apart. Sorry forgot the before shot. I will probably start another thread on the restoration of it.
