Problem Connecting Stoker to Laptop

After reading through 14 pages of discussions, I am still having problems. I usually don't have this many problems with computer stuff but networking just isn't my thing....

I am trying to keep my initial setup as simple as possible, I will progress to a wireless stoker config at a later time. However for now I just want to simply connect the stoker directly to my laptop.

I assigned my laptop a static IP (192.168.1.1)
using subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I assigned the stoker an IP of 192.168.1.70 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I plug the stoker into my laptop using a crossover cable.

The computer is assigned the ip as specified.
Verified using ipconfig at the command prompt.

I can not ping the stoker, can not reach the stoker web interface at 192.168.1.70

Can anyone out there that has gone through this give me a hand?

Welcome to the group Aaron!

When you say you have the laptop configured with a static IP address, are you certain you have configured the Ethernet port for that IP? Many laptops have an Ethernet adapter and a Wireless adapter built-in. Double check the properties for your Ethernet adapter. Also, are you running a firewall?

Tom, thanks for the reply.
Yes, when I go to the command prompt and do an IPCONFIG I can see:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Addresss: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway :

I have the windows firewall turned off.
I manually went into the stoker menu and assigned an ip of 192.168.1.70 and a matching subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I'm sure I am just missing something simple.
Thanks for the help.

You have done everything correct.

The two things I would suspect are the crossover cable and assigning the IP address to the wrong interface. It looks like you have already checked the interface, so perhaps the crossover cable. Do you have another computer you can check the crossover cable with?

Ok, so after double and triple checking the cable. I still saw no problem with the crossover wire order. So, I cut off both ends and remade the cable. Now the network light on the back of the stoker is on when I plug in the network cable and I can ping the stoker from my laptop.

However, when I try to go to the stoker web page at 192.168.1.70 (my stoker ip) I just get a blank page. (not a 404 error...just blank and it says "Done" on the bottom of the screen.

Anybody have a clue?

Partial Success!

Keep in mind, I don't own one of these things, so I'm just talking out loud here.

You could try to telnet into it and see if you can pull a console that way and see if there's an option to enable the webpage... Or, maybe it would be easier to install stokerlog and see if that can pull any data from the unit. Or, (this may sound silly) but have you tried to reset the Stoker by either removing the power or performing a "factory reset" if such an option even exists?

Stoker responds to ping but its web server is not visible in the browser and no firewall in the picture.... I am pretty much out of ideas with the crossover cable config. Sounds like you have everything configured correctly. I have found that sometimes I have to refresh (F5) the browser to get the Stoker's web server to appear but I'd bet you have tried that (probably multiple times!)

When all else fails....walk away and come back later. Sometimes things just fix themselves due to FM....(F'n Magic)

I walked away and came back two hours later.
Still perplexed....I shut off the stoker and unplugged the crossover cable.
I verified that when I unplugged the cable, I rec'd a "Media Disconnected" status when I checked my IP address. I plugged back in the cable (Stoker off) and verified that I still had no IP address. I turned on the stoker....
Bam....IP address assigned.
I pinged the stoker....
I went to the web page...and it works fine.
Same steps I had done 10 times over trying to get this to work.

Oh well, now it works directly with the laptop and a crossover cable.
Thanks to you all for your help and suggestions.

This is where I am at right now. Very frustrated...

If I am right, the problem has nothing to do with networking. Basically, once in a while stoker is powered on but hung. It will do certain things but not others. A sign is the blower staying on constantly when it shouldn't. Simply power cycle on and off. You may want to disconnect the blower if the problem remains and then plug it back it.

@Amir,

Thanks for the response. I have tried restarting both the stoker and laptop (many times). I watched yankeeRob's video again and set it up precisely as he described (static IP). I have tried it on a different laptop and with both firefox and IE explorer (refreshing that many times, as well). The ping works perfectly every time, regardless of what I do. I have tried it with the wireless off and the firewall off. I have tried switching cables. No luck. I would like to try the stoker log this weekend, but maybe it just isn't meant to be. I am sure it is something simple, just not having any luck figuring it out.

Thanks again for your help.

OK, more things to try

.

What do you see when you type "arp -a" in command prompt on your laptop?

Second, what version of the firmware do you have?

Keith,
I think what is happening is that the manual address you set for the stoker is already assigned on your network. Turn off the stoker and try to ping it. If you get a response then you are not actually hitting the stoker but some other device on your network.

If you didn't get a response then from what I've read I'm willing to bet the HTTP firmware is not running on the stoker. I'd flash it if that can be done. It seems the TCP/IP layer is responding so it should be able to be flashed.

It's based on Tini right:

Hi Rob,

Thanks a lot for your help!

So, when I ping the ip with the stoker off I get this:

I am unclear about what you mean concerning using a "flash". Sorry, I grow grass for living.

Thanks again for the help.

All set guys!

It was simple..I had the pc and the stoker with the same exact ip. I changed the last number on the stoker ip by one and the page popped up.

Thanks again for your help and sorry about the mistake.

Keith

Thanks again for your help and to Rob, as well. I had a feeling it was something simple. Anyway, I got the stoker log and the even updates to my phone working, so I am all set. I'll be giving a test this weekend.
