Positioning of thermometer bulkhead modification

I just got the Maverick ET-732 and I want to do the mod using the threaded electrical / lamp stock. Where is the best place to position these feedthru's? I'm assuming at least 2 feedthru's are required one for the meat and the other for the grate probes. Are people putting in two sets of holes for the option to hook up to top and bottom grates or positioning between grates so they reach both top and bottom grates?

Brian, between the upper and lower grates you'll be fine. I centered mine between the rack supports, but if your going to put 2 hole then just adjust for that.

I placed mine just a few inches down from the top and it works just fine. The probes from my Maverick and my other brands fit through and reach both grates with no cable reach problems at all. I can place 4 probes through the grommet at a time with no issues. I did paint mine with heat paint and also placed a fiber washer on back side of nut next to body to keep from scratching the body of the smoker. I also have a small cap that screws on outside when not used or choking out coals at end of smoke.

Mike what size threaded pipe did you use?

Brian,
Its the larger of the two sizes and has a 1/2" OD sizing. I was going to go with the smaller size but after looking at it I knew I couldn't fit multiple probes through it. The 1/2" was also easier to get a small gas cap to fit on it to close it off when not in use. I bought tubing at HD in the lighting section. It came with 2 pieces of the threaded tubing i package and I then bought a multi pack of nuts to fit them also in the lighting section. If you do this and want a cap to fit they are in the gas line section at HD near the plumbing section. Its just a small gas line cap. My grommet is cut pretty short so its flush with nut on inside and leaves a few threads past nut on outside to be able to place cap on. If you make it too long I read it makes it too hard to fit angled probes through, shorter I have no issues at all.

Here you can kind of see to the right of pic where it sticks out that its not really far out of the body at all. The inside smoker part of the grommet is flush though with the nut.

If you plan on putting handles on the side, it might be better to put the grommet a little bit lower.

Yours looks pretty close to where I put mine from your pictures and I think yours is the post I looked at for placement of mine before I drilled the hole :). I put handles on mine too but utilized the holes from the grate brackets to mount them to keep from putting more holes in the smoker body. Handles are seen in pic above and the brackets were easy to make for the handles. Granted horizontal handles probably work better for grip but I have had no issues using mine this way and saved at least 2 more holes from getting drilled.
