I've read all and used some of the techniques to build up a fire for slow cook, the Mignon method, fuse, bricks....etc. I was wondering can the original aluminum Weber charcoal baskets be used to hold burning briquetes? Maybe not in pair...maybe just one on one side? I ve bought a used 22,5'' kettle and I'm wondering why don't I see more of those baskets on the pictures. I'm deciding to buy or not to buy the baskets. So what is the real reason? Are those to small, to poorly made....

Thanks for answers.

i use the baskets all the time. i love them as well.

if you're doing a long slow and low cook, a few fire bricks will give you longer times between adding fuel but will increase the chances of the temps getting too hot.

I plan on fabbing up several baskets using expanded metal. I have the newer Weber baskets which just don't do it for me - small capacity, flimsy, shape doesn't allow maximum use of kettle space for charcoal, etc.

I'll shape and bend up something that fits the curvature and contours of the Weber better. Either that or I'll buy some 18 gauge sheet metal from a local metal shop and fab out something similar to the old 'BBQ baffles" that were made for the Kettle for indirect cooking.

Peter: The baskets can be used for a great Indirect cooking area. But for real low´n´slow i really like a radiant heat sheild, like bricks.

HH ribs will be fine with the baskets if you rotate the meat a few times. (but still fewer rotates with Bricks)

But normaly for almost everything(but ribs/brisket/butts) i just use the "bank all briq´s to one side" tec. 1 hot and one cold area.

Want a set of fire baskets? Take mine for free...Trouble is that you pay the shipping costs from Sweden to Slovenia.

Peter - My original side baskets are probably 10 years old and other than being a little fire scarred they're as good as new. In fact I can't tell them apart from the side baskets that I got last summer with my 26 3/4" OTG. I use them frequently and think they're great!

Hey thanks for replys, I see the picture....high heat baskets, low and slow bricks or other methods. It is realy cold here right now so I can't realy try right now but as soon as it warms up I am on it!

Thank you
