Older style regulator

I picked up a genesis 3000 redhead that has a male quick connect end on the regulator but not the female adapter piece that would allow connection to the propane tank. It didn't come with a propane tank so I suspect the piece I need went with the tank.

Is it possible to purchase only this female adapter piece or is it better and/or more economical to purchase an entire replacement hose and regulator kit? Any part numbers and/or sources would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm in the same boat you are. Yes, you can find the center piece, but I don't think it's worth it. Here's a link for one.

You can get a brand new hose & regulator for $14-$25 bucks depending on source & brand. And it'll come with the updated regulator nipple you can operate by hand instead of needing a wrench. Just gotta watch and make sure the end of the hose has the right male or female end.
Here's the full thing from Weber

Most likely, all you need is this.

Otherwise, I'm seriously thinking of just buying this one from Walmart and taking the threaded nipple from the regulator and using it on my old grill.

Thanks for the info. I remembered I had a propane-fired turkey fryer and was able to remove the fitting from that to the grill and got it to fire up. It fired right up and pegged the thermo. within a few minutes with no flavorizer bars installed. I really wanted to see it run because the person I bought it from said it was having trouble heating up. It looks like they replaced the burner tubes recently, maybe trying to fix it.

Now to clean the grungy cast iron grates and possibly the flavorizer bars, which may need replacing. The red on the hood is in great shape and the wood slats are in better than normal condition. The inside of the hood has a layer of gunk, but peeling a bit away revealed a perfect glossy black finish in one spot.

Sweet! I picked up 2 red-head gassers from Craigslist for free. I plan on restoring both of them. One has the durawood slats & handle and that's the one I'll sell. :D

You can go to a home supply store and get the fitting to use the new type propane tanks. It's cheap and easy to install. The trouble you'll have is a new generic regulator will not fit on the manifold of an old Genesis.
