Old (But Never Used) Weber Rotisserie Motor Question

When I bought my Genesis 1000 last month to rehab I also found an old but never used Weber Rotisserie on Craigslist for $35.00. I just opened the sealed box and plugged the motor in. It did not turn so I opened the case and manually turned the gears and it started to work. It appears that the grease on the gears and motor have hardened up.

The question is, has anyone re greased these motors and what type of grease and cleaning will I need to do to insure that this motor continues to work for a very long time.

TIA

I did a little write up on those long ago. they do have several issues. firstly, I take them apart and grease the shafts,
I have seen them start to seize. also lube the gears lightly. I use white grease.
also, make sure that you check all the electrical connectors and screws. I have found them loose.

White grease on the shafts also? Would lubriderm work for the white grease? Electrical connections are all good. When I said old but never used I meant it. The package had never even been opened. If lubriderm is ok, I might even have a tube of it in the shop.

Funny you should mention problems with your old/new rotisserie, Bob. I just experienced the very same thing when I took mine out of the box a couple weeks ago! I paid $30 bucks for a Weber #7614 at Wilco Farm Supply, they had a lot of Weber accessories on clearance, and I noticed 2 rotisseries. I called Weber and asked if any of the 2 would fit my Genesis Silver C, and she told me the 7614 would work. I was beyond thrilled to finally find a rotti for a decent price!
First time out of the box, I put it together, and put my seasoned whole chicken on it, trusted, of course, and turned it on.
Nothing! The motor didn't hum, the spit wasn't turning, nada! I take the spit with the chicken on it back into the house, and notice the lights on the kitchen appliances clock were off, and no lights in kitchen.
It blew the breaker! I reset the breaker and plugged it back in and took a parking knife and stuck it in the hole where the spit fits in, and turned it slightly, and the motor started humming!
Took it back outside, put it in the bracket, brought the spit with the chicken on it, stuck it in the hole, turned it back on, and it worked flawlessly, and that night, the dog and I ate the best chicken I think I've ever made!
Hearing your story, I'm wondering if this is a Weber motor defect?

No Mary I don't think it is. In this case, this roti was sitting in the box unopened for probably 10 or 15 years. When I plugged it in and turned it on, there was a very small hum but did not turn. I opened up the case and looked at it and touched the grease on the gears and it was pretty hare. Not rock hard but enough to stop rotation. Next I plugged it in and turned it on and then manually moved the gears and it started to run perfectly. What I will do is clean the gears and bearings and put new grease on the gears and bearings. This problem is only because it sat for many years and was never turned on. Not a Weber problem at all, just because of age. I will bet that roti was sitting on the shelf for many, many years and the grease had just gotten old. If I were you, I would just clean all gears and shafts and bearings and then apply new grease and oil on the motor bearings. Should give you years of use going forward. By cleaning and using new grease, you won't have to worry about the old grease gunking up the mechanism. Good luck with that.

Opened up the motor housing and stripped the motor and gears apart. Cleaned everything and them greased the bearings and gears. The old grease was kind of stiff and hard but all is now good. Plugged it in and turned it on and now works perfectly. Used a white lithium grease from Home Depot and am very happy with the results. Rehabbing old parts gives me a very good feeling.

yea, amazing what lubing things can do. on one motor I found a wire connector loose. on the other the wire was loose in the connector. i always suggest folks lube and check things first. glad your good to go now.
