new grill gates

I may have missed something along the way. but today I noticed that the ci grates on the new gassers are different and will work only one way. contrary to what I thought, the thick part is up and not the thinner part of the ribs of the grate. is this new or has this been so for a while ?

I have been using them this way ("thick" side up) for years. For me it does two things: You transfer more heat due to more surface area in contact with the food. The drippings under the grate come down to a point and give less surface are to cling to.

I recently picked up a set and am using them thick side up as I think the broader surface transmits more heat. But on my charcoal grill, I want as much meat as possible exposed so I would use the thinner side up. No science to backup my technique, just going by gut (which is always very happy with the results)! I will point out the photo on the box shows the wider side up as well.

Weber instruction showed thin side up. I asked them and the theory behind that was a thinner profile lead to easier release of the food. Easy to figure out as if I look at my Lodge CI grill pan the ridges are thinner at top (IOW not "squared") and of course release of the food is flawless. Just did a very nice T-Bone in it Thursday night. Flawless grill marks (no flame kissed flavor) but still very nice.

The grills I have seen in the stores have the thick side up.

I turned one over and the bottom/thin side had short knobs/feet on it.

It looks like they are designed for the thick side to be UP. There is no reason to have short feet stocking up on the grilling side.

I have never seen "feet" on weber grates so I cannot comment. I can only pass along what I have found out from the "horse's mouth" so to speak. Someone else has noted that Weber has made the cross bars in a way that makes it impossible to "reverse" them

My 6 year old Genesis has the thinner side up. But my neighbor's brand new Spirit has the thicker side up. I noticed this when checking it out a couple weekends ago. I'll double check my grates when I go downstairs later. Possibly a pic or two!

Hmmm, just got a 5 year old genesis and pulled the grates off to clean them. I didn't really pay attention to the grate so I will have to look at them when I put them back on . Good timing on this thread, thanks

I didn't have my phone with me(good thing, grills a mess!) so no pictures, but my grates can go thin or thick side up. I've always had mine thin side up. Just made sense to me.
