New Genesis E-310, A Few Questions

Hi, all. New to the forum and new to Weber grills. My old CharBroil hit the landfill last week and I decided to treat myself to a Weber Genesis E-310. It's a pretty copper colored model that I purchased from Lowes. It just arrived and, much to my surprise, it was already assembled. That's both a good and a bad thing. Good because it saved me the time of assembly, but not so good because building it is the best way to get to know it. That said, I have a few basic questions, so please excuse my ignorance. . .:o

1) I haven't fired it up yet, so I'm wondering if there is a "break in" or first time use procedure I should follow?
2) The grates are cast iron. Do these need to be conditioned in the way a cast iron skillet does?
3) Inside the cabinet attached to one of the doors is a hanging chain. I don't see any reference to this in the manual. Can someone tell me what it's for?
4) I'm curious about the ignition. I know it runs on a battery which was already installed. Just wondering, to replace the battery do I simply pull the knob off? That's what it appears like in the manual.

Thank you!

No real "break in" required but it is not a bad idea to get it hot, burn off any residual mfgr oils, and then while it's hot coat the grate with oil (I use Canola). Than cook and enjoy

I would run the grill for about 20 minutes to burn off oils. I would not use oil but cook some80/20 burgers to get some grease on the grates. The chain has a match holder on the end which is to be used if the igniter quits. I have not had to use it in 4 years. The igniter is just the battery in the knob. When you luck up the knob you will see the battery. The battery lasts for a couple of years. You will definitely enjoy the purchase. You made a great choice and welcome to the forum.

The hanging chain is to be used to light the burners manually. Looks like a poor design to me and I have not tried it yet.

I will tell you that my new Genesis gets much hotter that my old one. For example, if I preheat to 700 degrees, it takes a long time to get the temp back down to 400 degrees to grill a capon.

Overall I am very happy with mine and I am sure you will be also.

BTW, you can go to the Weber web site and downlaod a PDF file that give a lot more instructions you can read.

I will add occasionally it needs reset. You reset it but keeping all the burners closed. Lid open and gas on. After 30 seconds or so turn the burners on and light.

You need do this if the burners do not light or you get a smaller flame and subsequently lower heat. It is the safety valve being triggered which lowers the gas output and you will only get to 450 or 500 degrees after a long preheat.

Once you reset the safety valve by above procedure you will be ripping 700 degrees in no time.

Be sure to open the lid when you do this..you do not want to acidently have a burner leaking gas building in the hood then blow up your grill

You can read about it on the weber website
