I really want to use craycort cast iron grates in the 26er that i'm fixing up.

Unfortunately, they're too big and won't go all the way down to the standoffs.

My wife has an art journal for sale - and she agreed to let me buy the grates as soon as it sells!

I thought about replacing the straps on the inside to accomodate the new grates. But the grill is a '58 or '59 and I'd kinda like to keep it original.

I'm wondering if i could have some sort of grate risers fabricated so the cast iron grates will work (and not be loose) without welding or drilling.

Am I being retarded for even worrying about it?

That reminds me. I sanded and stained the handle for it on saturday. I picked it up today and its really sticky. WTH did i do wrong!?

I don't think the CI's are gonna fit Troy. I also think it would be too much trouble to raise the tabs up. But, if you have your heart set on it, you could add bolts or L brackets. But it would require drilling. Personally i would go original with a rare find like that. I can't wait to see the finished pics.

Troy,
Why not make some stand offs that attach to the charcoal grate..Threaded rod and bolts and washers. Something that could support the weight of the cast iron.
You could always use an old regular 26 grill for a frame to set the cast on.. Just out the center section.
Is any of this making sense?

i was actually thinking about using the old grill grate and building a support system on top of it to hold the craycorts.

thanks for the tip on the stain george. maybe i'll resand tonight.

ok, so i went and measures all the different dimensions of a new 26" and compared it with mine.

what a disappointment.

The bowl is essentially exactly the same. But the straps that hold the charcoal and cooking grates is more than TWO inches lower than on the new model.

The charcoal grate on a current generation is about 22". The charcoal grate on MINE is about 18.

The cooking grate on a new one is about 25.5
Mine... about 22.

I want, and NEED the real estate.
I'm going to modify my grill.

I'm thinking I will find someone to weld new straps, that way there's no drilling involved.

My old main grate is about 24 3/4? I just fit a Charbroil one meant for a 26'r I already had and I think it's gonna work just fine.

arrg

i'm retarded

the grate is 24 3/4

I saw big green egg cast iron grates that are 24" and oddly enough are only 24 bucks (at local weber dealer)

my head isn't clear at the moment. good thing its the weekend.

thinking that the $24 cast iron at local place MIGHT be a price mistake.

I might go back and buy it tomorrow.

i don't feel safe jamming the grates into the body george. I had a mis-hap once before with jammed grates and ended up with ashy food.
PLUS, the charcoal grate would need to be raised too, not just the cooking grate.
