Jim Balls' Carolina Style Vinegar Sauce

Jim Balls' Carolina Style Vinegar Sauce

1 cup Cider Vinegar
1/2 cup dark Karo syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
6 Tbsp "Crystal" brand Louisiana hot sauce
1 Tbsp onion powder

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and heat until just simmering and all sugars have dissolved. Allow to cool. Tastes better after it has sat a day or so and flavors have had a chance to mingle.
 
It looks sweet to me, but obviously I couldn't say having never tried it. My eastern-NC style sauce is more like 1c vinegar : 1/8c brown sugar, whereas this one is more like 1c vinegar : 1c various sugars (not sure how to factor in the karo, but some of it is liquid and not sugar obviously).

But maybe that's not the intent with this recipe and I'm comparing apples to oranges. Plus, I've got nothing against sweet sauces
