it was going so well..... any tips on de-soldering?

Success!!! I cut a couple inches off the fan wire and soldered it onto the board and we now have a fully functional HM!!!! Its not pretty, but it works.

Well done! Hey I've got a buncha circuit boards with a single wire going across them to fix something I messed up in the design or assembly. Once you put the LCD board back on top you can completely forget that it is there. Glad we were able to figure out exactly what was happening and come up with a solution, thanks to your excellent description of exactly what was happening.
