I am finally a deep firebox owner! (Genesis 1000 LX green)

UPDATE #1

The grill is disassembled.

The firebox was prepped and painted (1 can of paint)

The side pieces of the lid are off and the Weber logo is off

Found out that the burners are indeed in need of replacement (rot)

The frame is in a bit worse condition than I thought but it will need a total sanding and painting.

I am in talks with someone about making the wooden slats and handle as well as the replacement z bars.

The inside of the 1x1 frame is rust but just surface rust. I’m thinking of getting a skinny wire brush with a very long dull extender to run it through the inside of the hollow frame. Then I will do my best to paint inside the frame. Does this sound like a good idea?

The time and especially money I have to put into this grill is going to be more than I thought but it’s worth it for me (I think lol)

I will post pictures at a later update

That's to be expected on an almost thirty year old grill for sure.

Yes, sounds like a great idea. I do the same thing on my Genesis 1000 restorations except I use a rifle cleaning rod and brush in my drill .

Hey, still a lot cheaper than buying a brand new one that won't make it ten years.

Ha ha, that was a foregone conclusion based on your picture of the grill when it was lit.

Thank you for your help Steve!

I’m trying to find burner tubes. Do you know what I could use? (Preferably aftermarket from Amazon). It seems like the crossover tube is shorter

A lot of us have gotten aftermarket sets where they included a crossover tube that was too short, most likely from a Genesis Silver/Gold burner set. As far as I know it hasn't happened in a while though so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I would just base your decision on price and whatever reviews you can read, that's pretty much what I do.

Those reviews scared me. I ended up getting aftermarket. I also got an ignitor as the one that came with the grill gets stuck. Additionally I ordered a Weber propane cover 🙃

One last question before I go to sleep finally loll. When you cleaned the inside of the frame with the rifle cleaning rod, did you paint the inside? If so, how did you do this?

I just sprayed inside both ends of each frame piece. I didn't exactly obsess over it, I just did the best I could and moved on.

How long ago did you install these and are they still going strong? I just placed an order for the “plowo” brand. It seems similar maybe?
I just did the grill earlier in the summer and sold it so I have no idea on longevity. The fit and finish were excellent, so that's pretty much all I have to go on. I just know I don't want to spend the extra money on Weber branded ones when they are all made in China now anyway. The burner tubes in your grill are probably the original ones and were made in the USA ,but the days of any of them lasting that long are over.

You are right on that. We live in such a throw away society and I hate it. That is the main reason why I am taking this much time and effort into making an old grill new again. That and also these old webers look friggin sweet

Get yourself one of these https://www.eastwood.com/aerosol-nozzle-w-24-extension-hose.html and the Eastwood Encapsulator product. Both work GREAT!
