How much is to much $ to spend restoring a Weber Genesis 1100 LP

I found a Weber Genesis 1100 LP on CL (for Free, minus LP tank)and I was thinking about restoring it. When I called Weber today to ask about parts I know I would need to get it running the total came to a little more than $150. So if I nit pick about what needs to be replaced I can see myself spending up to $250. Would I better of not doing this?

Thoughts

Thanks
Chad

all depends on what the grill is worth to you. The cheapest new gas weber is still a lot more then 250..

Hey if it's free I say why not. You can always restore it as you have time and money then when you're done you'll have a brand new grill. and like Corey said you can't buy a new grill for that. If you can get away without replacing the grill grates and the flavorizor bars you'll save a lot of money. Let us know how it turns out!

Plus, I think you'll be WAY more proud of it than a new one off the shelf that cost twice as much.

i bought a redhead with sideburner for $50. kinda beat up and will take some work. i think i will be putting in another $200. i think it will be well worth it. so yea do it.

Well I talked it over with the wife and she says she likes the taste of food off the charcoal grill a lot more than the gas grill (which I agree with) - and she said she would not use it much, if at all. So, with that being said, I think I will put off the idea of getting a gas grill for now. I still like the idea of restoring one but I will give it some time and revisit the idea later.

Keep your eyes out on CL for a nice used Weber instead of a free one or plunking down the big bucks on a new one. If you look hard enough, you can find a Weber Gas 3 Burner on CL for $100-$200 that does not need any replacement parts and is much newer than the 1100.

I got this Weber 1100LP for $25. the guy was asking $60 but offered $25 to see what would happen. I say for the propane tank and grates its well worth the money I spent. In addition I got a fully functional redheaded Gasser. I am in the middle of rehabbing it right now. Here is is the before pick. Note the wood slats are all rotted out but I have the new oak cut down already.

I'll share my experience with Weber gassers.

A few months ago I responded to an ad for one asking $40. No cover, no tank, needed a grate and flavorizer bars. I offered $30 and the seller took it. It is a '00 Genesis Silver A and was otherwise in pretty good shape. Someone on this board pointed out a CL ad for someone selling Stainless flavorizer bars for a Silver B out East. They agreed to ship and for $31 I had a set of SS bars. A few minutes with an angle grinder and cutoff wheel and they fit.

It turns out that some really nice CI grates which were on our property when we moved in in '87 fit well enough. I picked up a propane tank (on CL) for $15 and spent $20 to refill it. In a weak moment I called Weber and bought the official cover for $40. (They comped shipping.) It cleaned up real nice and I'm really happy with the results I get with it.

A month or so later I replied to an ad for a free Weber gasser on CL. What I found was an '01 Genesis Silver B. I felt like I had found the big brother for my Silver A. It came with a tank (out of date) and a cover (funny enough - didn't fit the 'B' but it is the right size for my 'A'.) Best part about it is that it had already been upgraded with SS grates and flavorizer bars. All it needed was a good cleaning and a cover that fits. I even lucked out at the propane dealer. I asked them specifically if the tank could be refilled and they didn't notice the expired date until after they had done so. For the cost of a propane refill and some elbow grease I had a working grill. Well... It does need a thermometer to be complete.

A few weekends ago my son called after he had left our house to tell me about a Weber out by the curb a few blocks away from home. I checked it out and found what looked like a serviceable Genesis 1000 with the older quick connect regulator. It looked like it had the porcelain coated grates and flavorizer bars. It also had a ratty shorty cover on it. I hemmed and hawed for a minute and then passed on it mostly because the of the regulator. Later I found that Weber sells a modern regulator and hose for $30.

I've seen some other awesome deals on CL. (Or maybe just someone fishing for email addresses.) But I have what I need. I still watch just in case something special comes along, like a gasser with a side burner for real cheap.

There's plenty of discussion on gas vs. charcoal. Tonight I used my small gasser to grill some eggplant for a salad. Later I fired up a kettle to roast some corn and grill some salmon, onions and a pepper to complete dinner. Horses for courses. The gasser is incredibly convenient for grilling a few veggies. Charcoal is great for meat and fish and stuff that takes a little more than a couple minutes on the grill.

My recommendations:

Look for other sources for parts. Someone just listed flavorizer bars (unused) for a Genesis 300 series for $15. Also see what you can find on eBay and search the Internet for other parts vendors. Weber is probably going to be your most expensive source for parts.

Take your time and wait for a special deal. I've been surprised how often some good deals show up. It helps to have something like an iPhone or Android app to help watch.

Edit: I forgot to add that I found an unused rotisserie that fits both of my gassers on CL for $5.

I wish you luck finding a gasser that meets your needs at a price that makes you happy.

In the last three days, three free Weber gassers have come up on the Chicago area CL listings. One may be an email harvester though as I replied and have not heard back and yet the ad still stands. I just called on the most recent as it was not too far from home but it had already been claimed (in 50 minutes or less.)

Hard to beat those prices! The free one I picked up needed only a propane tank and cover that fit.

Weber's cheapest "Spirit" models & DuKane's are in the $300 range.

Their Genesis series is upwards of $500.

Personally, I would put their older Genesis models in a higher league than the Sprit, but then again, they're not new.

So, once you get much over $200 - I would start questioning the logic of spending that kind of dough on a restoration. At that point, for not a ton more, you're into decent (but not great) new-grill territory.

Also, you do not need to bite the bullet all at once:

If you want to save some bucks on your restoration, do the "essentials" first, to get it functional.

Then use it for a while and evaluate it.

If you decide that you like it enough to spend more on the "cosmetic" issues, then go for the gold.

If you don't think it will be worth the additional money, you can probably still sell it again and recover all or most of what you have sunk into it at that point.[/list]

It's a judgment call, but that's MY take on it.

Here's a link to my 3000 rehab for a friend: http://tvwbb.com/eve/forums/a/...0039023/m/1651072416

The grill was free and it ended up costing $300 to restore to "almost new" condition. She then spent an additional $120 for the rotisserie (not required but she wanted one). I could have bought lower end grates, flav bars, etc. but I convinced her to spend a little extra and get the best the 1st time. Here's what I got for $300, all brand new:

- left side table
- swing up table
- lid handle
- warming rack
- warm-up basket
- SS flavor bars (ebay, better than Weber originals IMO)
- SS grates
- catch pan
- aluminum drip pans
- black high heat paint
- cleaning products
- Weber cover

I see nothing wrong with spending $300 for a rehab. You could buy a lower end brand for this amount and replace it every few years or you could rehab an oldie and have it last a lifetime.
