do you keep the propane turned on for a chimneyful of K? I think I'm leaving mine lit too long. I've done 5 cooks and emptied a canister of gas.
 
No more than 10 mins, a lot of times less than 10. I am still on my original bottle, maybe 20 uses. Usually I can tell by the tell-tale wisps of smoke when I can turn off the propane. I assume you mean the propane on a Performer, yes? Sometimes I use the char baskets, sometimes the Rapidfire, the time with propane on is the same.

Get yourself some firestarters like Weber Cubes and you don't have to worry about using your gas. One cube is enough to start a chimney.
