How I do keep smoking wood from flaming on the grill?

I've tried soaking the wood but it still catches on fire. Last night I tried wrapping the chips in foil with holes to let the smoke out, but the foil caught fire. Should I use a smoke box on my Weber Performer, nestled in the charcoal? And if yes, does anyone have a recommendation for a good one? Happy Labor Day! Thanks Peg

Peg,try chunks instead. Just throw a big 'un on instead of some chips. It'll burn like the charcoal, but not flame. And you will get your smoke flavor. HTH

Hey, Peg. Welcome to the board!!

When using chips, I fold a piece of foil in half (making the HD foil twice as thick) and then make a pouch out of that...fill it with unsoaked chips and seal it up. Then I just poke 1 small hole in it, the diameter of a pencil (I think Kevin K taught me this). It seems to smoke perfectly and rarely catches on fire. I guess it's because not a lot of air is feeding the smoldering chips so they don't catch fully but smoke just right. But, as John said, keep the lid closed too.

Hope this helps!
