Hi everyone!

I've been reading many of your posts for awhile, and figured it was time to introduce myself.
I recently adopted a lovely Genesis 1000 that my dad bought in the 90s. I kept thinking about buying a new BBQ, but then seeing the wood handles and side table, etc. I figured I had something special that just needed a little TLC - which is how I ended up here!I hope to start refurbishing this in the next couple of weeks - I'd love to hear any tips and tricks, as well as advice on products for cleaning / repainting.
First off - anyone have any advice on refreshing this warming rack? Or is it maybe better just to replace it?

Cheers, and Happy Grilling!
Jon

Hi Jon, WELCOME!!!!

Sorry, I don't know a thing about the grills, but if you ever need some ideas on what to COOK on the grills, I am the one to go to for that. ;)

Welcome to the forum Jon, restoring an old grill like yours is what brought me here as well. A lot of the information you need can be found by searching through the many restoration threads here. As far as that warming rack, it is chrome plated and can't really be cleaned up once they get rusty so better to get a new one. Don't hesitate to ask questions and definitely post pictures of your progress.

Welcome to the forum!

The best options are to replace the warming rack or do without. It isn't particularly useful/important.

I hope restoring this grill helps to connect you to your dad. He certainly bought a quality grill in its day and kept it a long time, but the old girl has seen better days and needs some TLC.

Everything you might want to know and then some is available right here on the forum.

Your post suggests that you will be using this grill in lieu of purchasing a new one, so I would suggest a functional restoration. Get her running well first, and then start thinking about how far you want to go into the paint and cosmetic stuff.

Welcome Jon

if you haven't found this page, I suggest bookmarking it. There is a wealth of info on the referenced pages.

Jon,

on the 1000 and there is a warming rack, and a warming basket

The one in your pic looks like a warming basket. It mounts in the lid and is a swinging basket that will hold baked potatoes.

And the warming rack that sits up across the back of the grill: https://www.grillparts.com/weber/genesis.asp?product_id=7513

I don't use either any more and both are stored somewhere in the garage. It would be great to find a stainless steel version of the rack and then maybe I'd keep it near the grill. Its just plated steel and rusts away.

Welcome Jon ,
It looks like you might need a few parts for thar Geneses 1000, your best bet is to order the parts from Amazon.ca , Barbeques Galore in Surrey might have some parts but Amazon is your cheaper option, make sure all parts you buy are for your Genesis 1000 as DanHoo stated the swinging basket is not really necessary and no one really uses them and they are all chrome plated and rust in no time . The warming rack that sits across the back of the grill I definitely use , the standard Weber ones are also chrome plated but rust in a couple of years. because I utilize this rack so much when grilling I bought a stainless steel warming rack from Amazon.ca cost is $49.95 CDN the Weber ones are 1/2 the price but I got sick of replacing them because they rust so quickly , the link for the stainless steel warming rack on Amazon.ca is below.

Welcome from Nova Scotia Jon. That will make a nice project and you will have a wonderful grill when finished. I agree with Bill, Amazon.ca has a lot of parts if they are not available locally. Good luck and we would love to see pictures of your progress.
