Hi all - my name is Matt and I'm from central MD. I have a Weber Genesis E-310 grill and am considering buying a Smokey Mountain smoker this weekend. I go through about a tank of propane every 10 days-2 weeks in the Summer and really love to grill. I'm a good cook in general, but new to charcoal.

Right now I am trying to decide between the 14 and 18 inch smoker. I probably only need the 14 as it's just my wife and I, but occasionally I cook for 6-8 people. I can't imagine I'd ever need to smoke more than 4 racks of ribs and a pork butt in one day. How much more charcoal does the 18 use/need than the 14?

Thanks all - I am looking forward to meeting everyone and reading advice!

Matt

Welcome, I'm not a WSM owner but look forward to the responses. Based on what I've read from other post I personally would get 18, so again look forward to the responses.

Wecome to the forum Matt! I'd take the 18 in your shoes. I don't think it'll be a huge difference in fuel consumption. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum Matt. I'd go with the 18, better to have the room then to wish I had done it later. You can never have to much room for cooking. Looking forward to seeing some cooks real soon.

Welcome to the forum Matt. I would definitely go with the 18. I have the WSM22 and am checking Craigslist for an 18. Less fuel consumption since it is normally just my wife and I. Since I do bigger cooks occasionaly, I am glad I have the 22 but when I get the 18 that will be my main smoker. You might want to consider a Weber Performer in addition to the WSM. It is a great charcoal grill and is you stock up on charcoal at the major HD and Lowes sales, you will really be able to enjoy the best of both worlds. Come Labor Day, they will be having a major sale on Kingsford charcoal. You will really enjoy this forum. The people are very friendly and always willing to help. Enjoy the WSM.

Thanks all! I went ahead and bought the 18". Ran it most of the day yesterday using 2 loads of charcoal just to get a feel for it. I can't wait to start cooking which will be next weekend.
