Grommet Mod Question

For those of you who have done the grommet mod to your WSM, is a 1/8 inch inside diameter sufficient or am I better off going with a 1/4 inch inside diameter. Thanks.

Hugh,
Do you mean 1/4" or 3/8"? The Maverick ET-732 is too large for the 1/4" so if you plan to use it you have to go with the larger size. I have the 1/4" eyelets (grommets) from bbq guru. My guru probes and Weber Remote work well in this size.

If I had it to do over I'd go with the lamp rod (?)modification mentioned in one of the threads below.

1/4" electrical running thread, is 1/4" ID (1/2" OD), the probes of an ET-732 fit fine through it Grommet Mod. Use the bigger stuff, it takes the same amount of work and is much more versatile.

Good luck,

Bob

I did the lamp rod thing and it looks great even got a little cap on it.

It was not as difficult as some make it out to be I just used a couple layers of painters tape and a regular bit.

BUT I'm too lazy to use it anymore. Threading it is a pain after the cook so I just put the lid on top of the wires again.

I meant to mention that Cajun Bandit sells both the 1/4 and 3/8 in. grommets whereas BBQ Guru only sells the 1/4. The advantage of Guru's is that no drilling is required, but you have to use the existing 1/4 grate support holes so you're limited on the size of probes.

However, if I had to drill anyway I'd just go with electrical thread mentioned by Bob Mann because it's plenty large and you can cap it when not in use.

I too have the CB grommets. 3/8" is the way to go. I have the curved ET 732 temp probe. Both fit nicely through one opening.
