Grill Paint

Hi,
My Weber Genesis Silver needs some attention - new flavour bars for instance. The grills themselves are showing a lot of rust. I'm wondering if I can spray paint them with high heat paint, of if they are better off replaced.

cheers,

Replace them. Grill paint is ok for the cast sides and firebox, but not so for the grates/grills. I guess you could spray the flavorizers, but food/grease will stick to them a lot easier (not enameled and smooth like new). I would just replace both.

You can upgrade to stainless steel on both the grates and flavorizers (bars under grates)and will last a lot longer.

do they look like inverted half tubes ? are they really rusted through ? if not you can just brush off the rust and oil them up and yer good to go. unless you want to spend $$$$$$$ on some ss grates or the cast iron ones.

If your grates are enamel over sheetmetal, and the enamel is flaking, you might be best served by replacing them. If you can wire brush off the flaking enamel then you can preserve the steel by oiling them much like you would cast iron.

If the grates are cast iron, and they aren't rusted to the point of being structurally deficient, just clean them up and re-season them. A wire brush, sometimes a wire wheel on a drill, will remove the rust. Coat with oil, shortening, lard, or whatever you like, and heat until the fat smokes off. Repeat a few times for a good seasoning. There are lots of more detailed instructions for seasoning cast iron on the internet.
