Genesis Grill Lid

Hey guys,

Was working to get this lid cleaned up; got the gunk off and then used Simple Green+0000 steel wool. Looked pretty nice and then as it dried this discoloration returned.

Any experience with this? Is that just normal wear from the sun?

I believe that is notorious "Weber Fade" that often occurs on Weber black lid grills. And yes, from probably being out in the sun to long.

Follow up - can I make this girl a redhead then? Anything I’d need to do to make sure the paint adheres to this lid/porcelain surface?

I am very sad to see that fade. You can find a red lid, or have one redone with porcelain (big bucks). Paint will not stick to it, as it is essentially glass. Maybe someone would trade you that for a redhead lid? Come to think of it, I have a red lid I would trade you, that isn't perfect. But it is really nice.

yeah I was pretty bummed! I’m so new to all of this, I had no idea about this fade.

If you’d be open to a trade, that would be so awesome. My brother really did want a redhead so this would be a great surprise for him.

Here it is. Not cleaned up. It’s my work grill. This one has some pretty intense “black dotting” that was common of the red heads, which I’m sure others would verify.

I would give the outside a better cleaning, but there is a chip where the end cap bolts on. Otherwise it’s a very nice redhead.

We often times do not find out that they are faded until we get them home and clean them.
It happens to all of us.
Hopefully you will be as fortunate as I was here and find a donor.
