My Genesis 1000 purchased 1997 is looking tired. What is the best cleaning product to buff up the exterior paint which is black. I know it is going to take some elbow grease but I wonder what to use. Would it be okay to use an automotive rubbing compound? I've replaced the teak handle and side table. I replaced all flavor bars to ss about 4 years ago and they are working great. This unit just keeps working. Everything else is original.Any advice would be welcomed. Thanx.

Hi George, Thanks for the reply. The paint is oxcidized on the sides of the lid which is cast. The Black paint is like sandpaper on the top of the lid. I believe the the middle of the lid is just steel with a powder coat or some type of enamel finish. There is no rust, just a rough build up. It might just polish up but I hesitate. I,m hoping to find a rubbing compound that won't damage the finish.

I use ezoff oven cleaner in the yellow can whenever I am cleaning a grill. Once you start cleaning it takes quite a few coats of the oven cleaner and you do not want to stop until it is all pristine, there area lots of reasons not to stop. One of then is when it is clean no dirt then it can be washed with soap to remove all of the oven cleaner. Use only on the porcelain not on painted surfaces (likes to eat paint too). I just cleaned my sons one touch gold and it took 3 and 1/2 cans of e-zee off to get all the crap off on the inside of both the top and bottom of the kettle. Now it looks brand new!
I am also working on a platinum Series II which I have cleaned the top and the inside of the fire box. again 3 or 4 cans. I also use a brass brush on my bench grinder to clean the burners. With a lot of patience they look almost new and doesn't hurt the holes.. As to the frame if no rust then just polish it like you would a car (rubbing compound after a good wash then any kind of wax to seal it. If it is rusted then sand and paint. I have had good luck over the years using rust-oleum of various types to paint the frame and none of it has burned off. The outside of the fire box and ends of the top I use rust-oleum ultra high temp paint. Great paint but takes a lot to make it shine and be even.
I am such a nut that I even take the gas valves apart and clean them blow air through the manifold and assemble the valves with new gas valve grease.(makes them turn easy and smooth)
if you need and help just ask as I have done 4 or 5 at least. Last month my neighbor and I took a Silver b which used Natural Gas and was dead and removed the valves and manifold installed them in a 1100(with a lot of modification. then added new flavoriser bars and burners and has a new 1100

Good luck

I turned my old 1000 into a dedicated Coffee Roaster, so I want to keep it in top condition. I've got a couple donor grills that will keep me covered for replacement parts like the Fbars, manifolds, tank lines and burners etc. for a long time.
Keep an eye on CL in the winter, thats when I seem to find them.
Gary S shared some good advice-I'm glad I'm not the only one out there!
