I followed Tom Steed's excellent idea and made up an external ambient sensor with the thermistor in a 2.5mm plug. Ordering off fleabay, the minimum quantities that made sense were 4 x audio plugs and 10 x 10k thermistors. I now have three plug-in, external ambient sensors surplus to my requirements. If anyone in the UK wants one, PM me your address and I'll post one off.
 
I found lots of 10K thermistors on ebay. I was just unsure what other specs are important i.e. B25-85 value, R @ 25deg, etc...
 
paste 281399072142 into your ebay search. That should do it, nearly all the thermistors listed are the same spec. The more expensive ones are specialized and not required.
 
Ok thanks I ordered up a couple different kinds just to try, both 10K and Bk 3950k to keep close to the recomended thermistor specs.
