First cook with stoker

I did my first cook with my stoker.I set pit temp 235 over shot some, came down and was good. Then I took it up to 280 to finish cook off over shoot that temp came down again.Does the stoker always over shoot then come down to your set temp?

I just ran with a cross over cable to my laptop.I couldn't get text messages for some reason.Pretty good for first cook with it.I just hope the over shoots don't occur everytime. I was using a ceramic grill for this cook.

I have the graph but I don't have permissions to add a pic.
One more thing. I found a telenet file on desktop afterwards not sure how got there or what it all means ,here's what some of it says.

Yes, overshoot is very possible. Stoker has to adjust to the response time of your smoker first. In other words, it learns from its mistakes and corrects them better in the future.

Thanks, Amir.
Also if I have open lid detection on in the stokerlog , should I turn off the 5 min pause feature for the blower or does that not make a difference?

Thanks

lid detection doesn't do anything unless it detects a sharp drop in temp (thinking you openned the lid). So that is not an issue.

The messages you see are from the stokerlog. It was a debug feature that was left in version 5. I thought it would make a useful diagnostic tool to record everything stoker sends it.

You seem to have a more updated firmware than I have played with as I don't recall the "negative drive" messages before.

Was your laptop connected to your router via an ethernet cable? If not, I don't believe you can have a wired connection going (Stoker connected via crossover cable) at the same time as a wireless connection (Network connected via wireless router). So if you weren't connected from laptop to network via ethernet cable, I don't think you can get any messages sent out.

I was just only connected to laptop nothing else. I been having problems trying to get it to work remotley. It works hard wired to my router but I can't pick up remotely.

Starting to think I should have gotten a guru if I can't use any of the stokers features.
But it's probably my own fault .I'm clueless with the router setup.Just frustrating .Other than some over shoots it ran real good.

Thanks

Thanks

If you are using my program to monitor and control the stoker, you are way ahead of anything Guru can do

. Having remote access outside your home is something most people don't do.

Joe, I also use the Stoker on a ceramic and yes, it does overshoot but usually settles back down quite nicely. In my experience it also has to do with damper control. When I'm letting the Stoker bring my cooker up to temp I have the top damper open say 4 full turns. When I'm getting close to my temp. say withing 10 degrees, I'll close the damper down to cooking position, in my case that's about 1/8 of a turn. From there I don't touch her again.

Another thing that I like to do when using the Stoker on my ceramic is bring her up to temp manually and slowly. My ceramic has 2 inch thick walls and I like to "heat soak' her then put my meat on and connect Stoker. I only do this when I have a lot of time as it can take up to an hour or so to get the walls warm (depending on outside temp.)

Thanks guys,

Robb,

I only have a a wireless smc router right to my pc and my dsl box is plugged in to that router, it's the one from my previous post. I was planning on running a long cable from the router to my stoker. I was on with smc support trying to do port forwarding and they had me turn on dmz. Whatever they had me doing didn't work.
So for now I just use my laptop and crossover cable.Once I get a long cat5 I will be able to use it to my pc in the house. It works on the router at home just not remotely yet.

Instead of wishing you had bought a guru, you can just use the stoker like a guru (meaning set it on the stoker interface on the unit and let it do the work). Btw I am lazy and get the lump lit, add the meat, close it up and let the stoker bring it up to temperature. The meat acts like a heat sync and doesn't really overshoot.
