FINLLY... I got my first kettle otg!

Hello

It's been a long time since my last post been busy with my 2 month old son and loving it.
I finely got to get my first weber(otg 22" with my wife's blessing) and I am going to pull the trigger on it any day now but have a few question.

I have not picked up any charcoal yet an don't know witch to pick up. I have the low and slow book and Wiviott has given me the impression that briquettes are evil and you do not want to use them. But on the other hand I have watch a lot of YouTube videos on BBQ and it seems to me that a lot of people are using briquettes or a mix of the two. So I'm got to my local hardware store tomorrow but can't decide what to go with lump or briquettes?

Also I am looking out right now at my new kettle and as much as I know that it is built like a tank I think I might need to get a cover for it but is it worth the $30 or should I put that money towards something like a Smokenater...

Sorry for such newbie questions.
 
1st Congrats on your new toy, nothing wrong with using charcoal, Wiviott imo is a joke and a fat idiot be to be honest.
 
Great move to pick up a Weber kettle, you will be very happy with it.

Personally, I use simple Kingsford charcoal. It is very predictable, starts quickly and burns evenly. I don't know whether you own one or not, but definitely buy a Weber charcoal chimney to start the charcoal.
 
congrats on your TWO new babies. I love k blue, stubbs, and most lump. Just pick one and cook with it. They all work. I would pick up a cheap cover. weber has the grey ones for under 10 bucks. Mines going on 3 years now with no holes or tears.
 
You will love your kettle. I have used Kinsford blue for many years and my Father used since I can remember. Lump is excellent for high heat. And X2 to what Corey said, buy a cover.
 
I like Stubbs for everything best, but I won't pass up 40 pounds of KB for $7 for straight grilling.
 
I'm with Shaun...I like the low/no ash products, just because you don't have to empty the ashes so often, but I would not pass up those 40# packs of K'ford Blue either.

Wiviott and his book seem strange and vary ridged to me compard to the mass BBQ community. You have to to do what he tells you and use what he wants.

I just going to try beer but chicken for my first cook with my new kettle.
