Anyone ever made an extension ring for your Weber 22.5 kettle grill out of a 55 gallon drum? I see folks making UDS smokers and using 22.5 parts for the top and less often, the bottom.

What I really want is a 12 inch or 18 inch so I can add a couple more grates, or drape sausage or bacon in it.

Since I use the Smokenator in my Weber, I'd probably cut an access door in one side so I can feed charcoal as necessary.

Any info, pointers, links, etc etc would be greatly appreciated.

Well, yes, a good choice and a nice unit to be sure. But on the wrong side of the Pacific Ocean for me. The 55 gallon would already be on this side and I just need to get a fabricator to chop and fit. But if it's been done before, I thought I'd ask for pointers rather than re-invent the wheel.

Sorry,
Didn't realize your location.
I haven't seen one, but I am sure if you "Google" it, you will find someone who has done it. I know a lot the UDS builders use Weber lids, so using a bowl has to be doable.
You probably just need to weld a piecc of metal to the drum that will allow it to sit on the rim of the bowl.
Or possibly use a donor lid and cut it out to fit on the bottom of the drum.
Be sure to show us some pics when you get it done.

Steve,

I think the ribbed sections and rolled lips are just a hair too big to work with the kettles directly. Hence, people cut off the lower bowl lip and place it inside the drum or use a 2-3" flat sheet metal inside the inner diameter to create a new lip that is smaller.

I think if you cut .5" or so right below one of the ribs of the drum, you can get it to fit exactly inside the lip of the bowl similar to a rotisserie or WSM middle section. Same goes for the top part going to the lid. The rib will still give it some structural integrity.

this guy did the exact same thing: http://www.bbq-brethren.com/fo...wthread.php?t=130813

Hope this makes sense/helps. Why not just build a UDS?

Thanks guys! The reason I can't go for the UDS solution is simply no room in my apartment. I have a small balcony that I can fit my Weber 22.5 and a small chair & table on, but a UDS would be a bit much. I'd have to trade one for the other and I'm too fond of the Weber to relegate it to storage.
