Expanded Gal Mesh

I've been given a couple of sheets of expanded gal mesh which i'd like to cut up and make some charcoal grates with.
I know its not safe to cook with as is but is there anything I can do to make these safe to cook with?

Burn off all the galvanizing and they should be OK. Expanded metal is fairly cheap, why risk it?

Using galvanized material in a high heat cooking environment is the last way I would try to save a few bucks.
