Expandable rack SOS

I've never thought of myself as a klutz until I starting using my new Weber expandable rack on my 18.5 WSM.
I've used it three times, hanging chicken halves, a tri-tip and spare ribs. And on all three cooks I've had to don my welding glove and fish cross pieces from the rack out of the hot coals. And to top it off, I've also dumped the entire rack in the coals.
The food has been fabulous, but pieces in the coals make cooking on it frustrating.
Am I alone, fellow expandable rack owners?
Anyone have of a fix, other than trying to be more careful?
Thanks.

no experience with one but just looking at it I saw something that I would do immediately.
I would bend over the ends of the crossbars so they cant shift easily and drop.
if the rack itself folds a little and drops in I would rig up something to force and keep the legs
spread out.

You have to watch for it, but I haven't had anything fall. At first I was wondering why they didn't attach the bars to the rack; they must think you will hook the food on the bar and lower it onto the rack.

Why not find some stainless steel wire or a clamp and attach them?
