Dad's BBQ Sauce

1 cup ketchup
6 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon plain prepared mustard
3 tablespoons finely minced yellow onion
4 teaspoons bottled liquid smoke flavor (hickory)
1/4 teaspoon Louisiana-style red pepper sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt

Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan. Mix well. Simmer over low
heat for 30-minutes, stirring occasionally.

Haven't tried Rusty's sauce but just a word of advice, 4 tsp of liquid smoke IMO seems like alot, maybe it's not like I said I've never made the sauce, maybe you can add it to taste or 1 tsp at a time until you get the "smokieness" you're looking for.

Again...just my opinion.

Bruce,

That's the way I got the amount to 4-tsp.

I adjusted it up until it got the amount of smoke I like (and the rest of the family). That's using Colgin brand. Wright's brand is stronger and I use less. But like you said, that's an individual thing, just like adding hot ingredients.

An alternative for smoky flavor notes is to add chipotle or smoked paprika and a few T of the juices from the resting meat, as seen here. The juices also add cooked meat and rub flavors giving the sauce more depth.
