Custom color...used 18.5???

Just bought a 22.5, don't want my 18.5 to get gealous. Looking at giving her a makeover.I've seen the special project blue and red cooker...these were done with new ones.

I've found a place that does ceramic coatings rated for 2200 degrees. I'm not home so I haven't priced it, but was wondering if refinishing a used cooker could be an issue.

My 18.5 is a 2005 model. A lid thermometer is the only mod right now. Will do additional hood vent, a couple probe inserts/eyelets/grommets and clay pot deal...maybe buy a new door because I hate the old one. I've also heard the new style with the pan on the bottom is a better design. Anybody think that it's worth buying the new legs and pan?

Curious for your thoughts. Thanks,
Dennis

Hi Dennis, is there a link to that place. Others like myself may be interested as well. Thanks

Shaun,
I just googled El Paso powdercoating...found a company of the same name:
http://www.elpasopowdercoating.com/powdercoating.php

I had a friend call them last night, for sandblasting and all, the loose quote I got was $300.

Travis those were, as I stated above, new cookers. I am wondering about lingering dirt ruining a new finish attempt. Sandblasting should take care of most of that, but what about,...(I'm not home or I'd look) isn't there a rolled lip on the lid where dirt, grim can go?

Would/could impurities from under this lip come out?

You can diffenently powder coat a grill/smoker too, Alot of folk's think it can't be done, But they have high heat powder coating avaible.

James, thanks for the info. Was thinking 2200 degrees was waay over what I needed for this application.

I'm hoping that price to be a gross overestimate, otherwise I'll be researching cheaper options.

Assuming temp ratings go up with cost of the materials, what temp rating would give me a good margin of safety so my finish doens't go up in smoke? 600? 1000?

Thanks,
Dennis

D all try and find out in a few about that temp rating...But i know someone who did there exaust pipe's
on a harley davidson. That's how i found out about it.

the responce i got was... I don't know the technical answer to your question,, I think I remember the powdercoater telling me 1400-1800 degrees,, but, I'd be skeptical of that until proven..
The exhaust might get to 1000..
The particular powder was rated for high temp, and, so far so good..
Any full service powdercoater should be able to either give you an answer, or be able to find it, I'd think.
Also, it didn't come in a lot of colors,,but, it was done several years ago, so, the product development might have moved along since then!!

I think its a great idea! I am building one of the mini WSMs from a SJS and I plan on getting it and the imusa pot all powdercoated red (Go Cornhuskers). Im also gonna add 2 side handles on the pot that can fit the weber wood replacement handles. Hoping to have the first perfectly matched mini wsm with all weber hardware instead of those pot handles. But very cool let us know how it turns out. Ill keep you all updated on the mini wsm project on the Portables thread.

Well...
After an exchange of emails the price I got quoted was $350. Sorry folks, for this guy that's too much moolah for looks.

If I ask around the campfire maybe I can find someone to paint it with some high temp auto paint for cost of materials...I'll do the prep work myself.
