cold weather grilliing idea.

I am sure that others have brought up this simple solution but I will share it. When it gets really cold here in Wisconsin I sometimes have trouble maintaining temperatures. About 5 years ago I was making meatloaf in my Brinkman at about midnight we had a torrential downpour. I had and extra lid off of a old 26" kettle grill. I put the 26" lid over the Brinkman to keep the water out. About 30 minutes later I took the lid off and the temp had went up about 70-80 degrees.

I often take the 26" lid and set it on top of my Performer, if I can't get out of the wind or a snowstorm. The extra lid does a wonderful job of insulation. I have used it once or twice on the WSM. But never in the wind, it makes it to top heavy.

On a 22.5 Kettle the 26.5 fits right over the top. It is a little unstable since the 26.5 lid is sitting on the 22.5 handle underneath. On the EL Cheapo Brinkman it is very unstable. But if the wind is not blowing I have left it on to raise the temps. I just keep a eye on it all all times.

Thanks Brian - What an interesting idea. It would be possible to expand on your double lid idea for something with a better fit. Thanks, Bob

heat rises, so most heat is lost through the lid. sandwiching two lids make a nice pocket of air insulation. good thinking!

I had a Thermometer mounted in the lid of my Brinkman. The lid temp dropped from 300 down to about 140 when it was pouring rain down on it. I lifted off lid to check the meat and I had a round pie tin catching grease under the meatloaf. The rain splattered the grease down into the fire and I had a inferno going. I put the lid back on and the fire was shooting out of the seam between the charcoal bowl and shooting up the body. So I put the lid back on to smother the fire. Then I saw the extra lid and threw it on top. I came in the house and my wife was crying she thought it was so funny. Midnight cooking meatloaf and its thundering and lightning. The meatloaf was covered with soot. And the next day I looked at the Brinkman and the paint was all black and coming off on the bottom where the flames where shooting out.
