Chest Freezers-5 cf

We've had the same chest freezer for 15-20 years. It still runs fine but the gasket was shot so I replaced it with EPDM weather stripping which mostly worked with one small gap. I decided it's time for a new one so started to research a bit. What I found is that they're all essentially made in the same factory in China. Magic Chef at Home Depot, Hotpoint at Lowes,Frigidaire at Walmart, Best Buy has it's house brand Insignia.
I decided against ordering online and having it shipped as dozens of negative reviews are about damages due to shipping. Besides, Delaware is 6 miles south with no sales tax. They were all about $170.
Lowes is the closest right over the state line. Went there yesterday and right out in the middle of the appliance aisle is a stack of Hotpoints on sale for $149 and $169. The difference was one model had an led light built in the door.
Don't need that so out the door for $149. Not bad. Hope it lasts as long as the other which I'll give away or trash.
What's been other folk's experience with these garage freezers?

My experience is that most if not all newer appliances will not last near as long as the old ones.
My last chest freezer (which I use as a kegerator with a seperate temperature controller) lasted 5 years.
You may consider using silaicone caulk for the gap on your old chest freezer gasket and keep as a back up (if you have the room).
The advantage of the newer units is they typically use less power then the older ones.

No. I trashed the old one. It was a White Westinghouse...I think a long extinct brand. Fingers crossed it lasts nearly as long as it's predecessor.

Depending on how much $ in food you keep in your chest freezer, I would recommend a chest freezer alarm to alert you if the temperature goes above a setpoint to avoid spoiled meat and loss of $.
I don't use an alarm since I keep kegs of beer in mine.

I bought a 6.9cf Hotpoint at Lowes about 18 months ago. The price was right and it fit my need. One feature I like is the top is quite solid when compared to many brands. I mounted a 3 tap beer tower on it, so a wimpy top doesn't work for me. So far, I'm happy with it. It's very quiet and holds temperature well (36F using an external controller). Also was light enough that I was able to load and unload it myself. I like to buy American but everything I looked at was Chinese:(

What do you keep the thermostat dial on? I've got ours set at 5.5 out of 7 max., although the manual says 4.

Mine's set at 4. It really doesn't matter because the external controller will cycle off long before you reach even the least cold setting. Refrigerators are different and should be set at the coldest setting.
