Charcoal Ring Size for 22"?

Would someone please measure and post the diameter of the charcoal ring for the 22" WSM? I have the 18.5 and wonder if the 22 ring will fit inside on the charcoal grate (so it would need to be about the size of the 18.5" charcoal GRATE).

I've added the lid holding tabs on the lower section of my 18.5 and although this allows the WSM to be used as a charcoal grill, it has limited space within the charcoal ring (which provides a rest for the grate). If the bigger ring will fit inside, I'll get more space.

Alternatives might include getting the charcoal baskets designed for the OTG (and ideally, the folding food grate) if they will fit in the 18.5.

What I'm after is better charcoal spacing for indirect grilling than is allowed within the 18.5 charcoal ring. There are other options to provide support for the grate (rather than using the charcoal ring itself) and even to allow variable height adjustment for the grate, but I thought I'd check on the simple and expedient first.

And a further option which I'm checking for on a daily basis is to just find a good deal on an OTG Gold on craigslist

Rich, what I did was use longer bolts to the top legs which now provides support for the grill grate.

It should be the same as the 22 kettle: 17 in.

Thanks, John (and Timothy). I'll look at the longer bolt -- sounds like a good approach. But I'm still interested in some of those other options I mentioned if the baskets and/or folding grate will fit.

If I can get what I want in the WSM "egg", I probably wouldn't bother with a Gold but would just make a stand to bring the egg up to height.

Rich, I just measured the charcoal ring from my 22.5" WSM, Its actual size is 17.25" outside diameter, X 4.75" tall

Again, thanks. The 22-ring will be too large (as I suspected), so I'll be looking at the other options. I'll update this thread with anything else I find out.

Ok, it's certainly obvious, but the parts I wanted are shown at the Weber site here: http://store.weber.com/Items/A...=3&cId=225225&sort=N . You can find basically equivalent parts for both the 18.5 and the 22. (I'm making the perhaps rash assumption that what fits inside an 18.5 OT will fit an 18.5 WSM -- I'll confirm when I get them.)

These parts are also available from Amazon (with a contribution to TVWBB). There are several options at Amazon, choose carefully -- someone complained that while the ad for one grate said it would fit the Performer, it actually does not.)

I ordered from Amazon. Though the cost per article was a little more, the free shipping made a lower net total. Plus the contribution, of course

So I expect to be out of the market for a used One Touch and have a need to make a stable platform to raise my WSM "egg" to a suitable level. That isn't an issue and I should be able to also gain an decent side table whenever the "egg" is a "bullet".

Now I just need to find the distance between the OneTouch charcoal grate and it's cooking grate...

To wrap up on my quest, I received the hinged grates and briquette holders from Amazon this afternoon. As I anticipated (and really, really hoped

), the parts for the 18.5 OneTouch fit perfectly in the 18.5 WSM.

I'm looking forward to trying a steak on this setup, but unfortunately will have to wait a bit. Too many set plans and have the urge to smoke.

Dumb question here. Has anyone ever used the charcoal ring for the 18.5 on the 22.? If so, what kind of burn time compared to the 22 ring.

Since there's no "knowledgeable" answer yet, I chip in. Yes, I've seen some posts about it (you may want to try some Searches). Apparently it does help reduce the charcoal used for smaller cooks. It's better than just trying to pile a smaller amount of charcoal in the center of the 22-ring as you can concentrate the coals.
(Notice, I have no experience with this myself.)
