How many people are you going to be smoking for? How much meat do you think you would put on at any one time?

I have the 18 and it's plenty big for my needs at this point. I will probably get a 22 at some point, but for now, the 18 makes more sense.

I saw your other thread and if you're going to sell the OTG to get the WSM, maybe get the 18 and if you find you need more room, you can always sell the 18 (they go pretty quick on CL if in good shape) and get a 22.

Willie, went through the same debate earlier this year when I decided to purchase a WSM. After reading countless threads on tvwbb, I went big. I'm always wanting more real estate on my kettles, I couldn't see where there would be any diff with the WSM. I have cooked massive amounts I would never have dreamed possible in one cook down to what should have been done on a kettle, and have not been disappointed. You can't go wrong either way!

Build one of those tamale pot mini WSM's and then get the 22" to go with it. Big for when you need it, mini for when you don't.

I have the 18 and it is plenty for me. Usually 6-8 people. I have read that the 22 really uses the fuel and it's not like the 18 doesn't go through it's fair share. I would base it on the average amount of people you cook for. I have done pork butts, 3 racks of ribs and jalapeño poppers all in one day on the 18. Just my opinion. Hope it helps. Happy Qing!

for me the biggest deciding factor is room for baby back ribs

i don't want to cut, or roll my racks of ribs

i just want to lay them down and smoke them (6 or 12 racks at a time)

The 18" is slightly more efficient and lighter so it's easier to move around.

However, I would get the 22" if I only had to have 1. The extra space is wonderful. If you want a fuel efficient small smoker, build the mini tamale pot.

One day I am going to do 4 butts, 2 on each, starting with the same amount of charcoal and give an accurate comparison on fuel usage. I say the 22 uses more, but I am usually cooking A LOT of meat on the 22 where as usually only 2 butts or a few racks on the 18. Also, my 18 is very seasoned and sealed, not so much with the 22".
