Burner/Flavor Bar Config Difference Between Old & New Genesis

Hello all,

It's been awhile since I posted on this forum, I have not smoked anything since Jan. But hope springs eternal :)

My Silver Genesis-B is 14 yrs old this spring. I's getting a bit rusty but still has a many years left. I was filling up my LP tanks at my local store (Fairfax Propane) when I asked about the new Genesis and Summit models. I told the older guy I was thinking about upgrading to the Summit because it packed more heat. He told me to take care of my Silver Genesis as long as possible. He said the old Genesis outperforms the new; he hates the small wheels on the new Genesis but most of all he hates that Weber re-positioned the burner/flavor bar configs from W-E to N-S on the new Genesis; "doing this killed the air flow for indirect cooking" ie when you user the outer burners and turn off the middle burner.

Hmmm? He has a point on the wheels. Those dinky wheels are a pita to roll over grass and uneven surfaces. I do a lot of searing then apply indirect heat to finish off the meat. He implied that Weber has been overcome by the marketers (make the form factor pretty/attractive) at the expense of engineer/designers (the ones that actually cook and use the grill). He also prefers porcelain/plastic over S/S because it's easier to look cleaner.

The smaller Genesis E-330 form factor suits 99% of my daily needs plus I'm not out to impress anyone with my grill. The change of the burner/flavor bars is a concern.

All the Summit grills run N-S instead of E-W
I like my E-W Genesis even though it's rare the ol' girl gets fired up.

Gene,

I recently (in January) got a new Genesis to replace my 12 year old model. A few comments:
1. I would not get SS again - too much trouble to clean and look good.
2. The new Genesis heats up much faster and gets to over 700 degrees very early - then it is difficult to get it to "cool down" to 350 to 375 degrees for indirect cooking.
3. Love the SS grates.
4. Have not had a problem with the NS burner configuration. You can turn off the center NS burner and have the outside burners on - that is similar to the way I cooked on my old one.
5. The propane tank setup is a bit tight. I would have prefered it be outside the cabinet for easier access.

Hope this helps.

Have an old Summit 450 similar in size to a Genesis and a VERY old Genesis II red head. Both are better than anything ever to come from a big box store with names like JennAire or NexGrill and so on. Just so much Chinese junk imo. Both grills do indirect cooking wonderfully HOWEVER for rotisserie the EW genesis cannot be beat. I have tried doing it on the Summit and I get a decent result but not like the nice "wall of heat" that the Genesis EW design produces. IMO yes Weber fell to the cry babies that said "I have no place for my tools" and reoriented the burners. Very sad IMO. I have cooked on the new Genesis (sister has one). I must say it's excellent but since they don't spin food they don't know or care about rotisserie performance. Let's face it far more people don't rotisserie than do.

Thanks for all of the comments. When my Silver Genesis-B rusts out in x years, I will replace it with another Weber. Maybe the next-Gen Weber gas grills will return to W-E burner config. :-)

I doubt it the cry babies would have a field day. Actually all kidding aside I will bet it helped Weber cut some mfg costs. Would not surprise me if the burners are now the same between Summit and Genesis
