BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2

Got my DigiQ DX2 last week and yesterday I drilled and mounted the adapter.

I used duct tape on the inside and outside of the unit and started my hole with a 1/16" bit, but I only did a starter hole about half way through the unit with it.

Then went slow with Irwin #4 step bit and kept some oil flowing on the bit. Perfect hole and no chips. I started the hole 4.5 inches down from the top of the bowl so the blower vent is above the charcoal rack.

I also drilled two smaller holes for lamp rod so I didn't have to put the probes under the cover.

With that all done I fired up the WSM, put a couple of split turkey breasts on the cooker and took the Guru for it's first ride at 230 degrees.

I also had the Maverick-732 hooked up and noticed that the food temp on both units was about the same throughout the cook. The maverick pit temp showed a constant 10 degrees lower than the Guru.

On food, both units were 5 degrees behind the ThermoWorks Thermapen around finish time.

The Guru was spot on for 3.75 hours and I'm really impressed with the unit. It held 230 on the nose for all but one run to 235 and then right back down. The unit held 230 so perfect I thought it was frozen on that temp.

The choice to buy that unit and all the information to drill and install came from this site and all this rambling is to THANK YOU to all who made contributions. It sure is going to take some stress off the grilling process.

I'm going to do a overnight this evening with a pork butt and not worry all night.

Thanks again all.

Is there any reason you drilled a hole when BBQ Guru provides an adapter that can be used over one of the existing vent holes?

Also, did you know you can replace one of the existing bolts for the charcoal racks to sit on with a lamp rod?

I cut the hole because I didn't like the idea of ugly heat tape on my smoker. I know you can buy metal plugs etc., but I'm happy with my decision. Now if I don't like it in the future I will just plug the hole with ugly heat tape.

I believe the existing bolt holes will not let me put in my maverick meat probe. Perhaps I'm wrong, but the holes are done and came out perfect.

Brian;

I had Guru eyelets on my WSM and my ET-73 probe leads went in there just fine.

I upgraded to an ET-732 only to find the probe leads are larger and will not go thru the eyelets. I'm opposed to running probes under the lid, so I did the lamp rod like you.

If WSM owners are careful, use painters tape (or similar) and make a pilot hole, all will come out beautifully.

I cut the hole in mine too. This way I can smoke without the Guru and don't have to deal with the tape. Did the same with my Performer. It looks clean and I never have any problem with the mounting. Love my Guru: Set it and forget it.
