Adding a propane burner

I want to add a burner to my kettle. I would like to still run charcoal in it though and just use the burner to light the charcoal and goose the grill to recover super fast from lifting off the lid during cooks.

I think for that purpose I would really need high power and the common Gas Go-Anywhere burner would be much to small.

My kettle is the older style with 3 vents. Any suggestions for burner or installation?
 
personally i'm just not seeing the need. but i would love to see what you come up with. the thing that hits me is trying to keep the burner clean.
 
Sounds like you need a Performer. They have a gas assist for lighting your charcoal. Its not really inteneded to do more thant lighting, but you could run it for the purpose of adding heat to the inside. If you don't want to buy a performer, you could modify a regular kettle with the burner that goes in a Performer. It would mean drilling a hole in yuour grill. Not so easy as some think. No. If the only benefit is lighting the charcoal, it just isn't worth it to me. My chimney will do. If i go to the trouble of a propane I would like it to be able to help control temperature and recover from opening the lid. That really changes the temperature dramatically. I never realized how much until I put a data logging thermocouple in it during a cook. It could also be used to augment the charcoal temperature during longer cooks.
 
I would like to see this. Personally I (and so many here) have too many kettles and it wouldn't hurt to convert one into gas to see how well it works. It would be a fun experiment.
 
I think putting some type of burner in the bowl is not worth the trouble. Why not just get a gas bbq? Is the temp loss really a big deal? You're not making a souffle are you?
If its necessary to increase temp, maybe you could stoke the fire with some air, like a Stoker or DigiQ You don't need the actual device, just the fan to blow on the fire..
Just some thuoghts..
 
Where ya located Fred ( country )?
There was a thread a few yrs back on a conversion kit available from an Australian dealer.
