Adapting a WSM 14.5 for grilling...

Has anyone done this? Perhaps by putting a pair of doubled-up charcoal grates on the mid-section cooking rack, and then putting the coals on that mid-section cooking rack - about 5" below the top cooking rack? The charcoal ring could be used there, as well.

Cool way to make the WSM more versatile?

With the above method, the water pan could be lined with foil and used to catch ash.

No one's tried this idea? I would love to be able to grill with the Weber Smokey Mountain.

Folks use their WSM as a grill all the time. Especially if camping or tailgating. See link below.

But most on here would do their real grilling on a Weber gasser or kettle.

A 13.5 inch cooking grate is pretty small to begin with. And it gets even smaller if (as most charcoal grillers do) you set it up in a two-zone configuration. A 22" kettle is a much better tool for grilling. Doesn't take up a lot of space and can be obtained easily off of Craigslist for few dollars.

A WSM is a great smoker but a meh grill. A kettle is a great grill but a meh smoker.

That's a great link, thank you... discusses precisely what I was thinking about doing.

I do have the Weber Smokey Joe (Kettle 14.5") so, I'd probably use that rather than grilling on the WSM 14.5 - but I may give that a try just for fun.
