A second charcoal in the house

I use and have a bunch of Jealous Devil charcoal already.
I have found a new local store that has other bbq products I am going to get an order together for.
I checked their charcoal and there are a few here I have not used before........I see one by Blues Hog called HOG LOG
In the pic provided you can see all the options I can get my hands on.......if you have tried hog log or any of the other ones that are really good I would be interested in hearing about it.
I use JD, I think it is a premium charcoal and I love it.......
I want to try another brand and have a second choice on hand but I only want a product that is exceptional.....and hope you can share why it is exdeptional.
Thanks for you input!

ps.....I have never used B&B anything and I have tried blues hog briquettes and didn't think anything special on the bricks.....worked like Weber, lots of ash. Also do not like the kamado joe lump......won't use it again after trying 2 bags before.

I tried the blues hog lump and brigs. I wasn't impressed.
I like B & B brigs and char logs which are extruded charcoal.

Appreciated....I don't know this guy at all but I listened to what he had to say. What he says makes sense so I am going to give the B&B lump a shot. At $17 per 10 pounds it is cheaper for me than JD which is exactly $2.00 per pound. Not a ton but hopefully it's good and has a nice offering like the JD bags do. If the bag has about a pound of garbage at the bottom then it obviously isn't a cost saving effort.
Also it is oak and have never had the opportunity.....we will see.

Blues Hog HOG LOG still interests me though.

Still open to thoughts, I will be ordering again.

Dude, check out the B & B products, a combo of their Orange bag Briquettes & char logs is hard to beat:

I wasn't super impressed with B&B lump, though I thought it smelled good when lighting and in use. I went through several bags and all of them sparked quite a bit on lighting. Ash production was pretty average.

I have used the B&B briquettes, but I felt like they produced a ton of ash, and also they would sometimes spike the temperature when the briquette crumbled in half mid-burn.

Blues Hog briquettes are OK. They smell better than Kingsford when lighting, but nothing stood out about them. I didn't like the hog logs.... felt like they crumbled quickly and produced a lot of ash. I've never seen their lump in stock somewhere when I needed to buy charcoal, so I haven't tried it yet.

It's hard to go back to other charcoals after using premium ones like Jealous Devil. My other favorite is FOGO Super Premium lump.

I do use quite a bit of a generic mesquite lump from Sonora found locally here that runs less than $1/pound, but I definitely am getting what I pay for....

Watched that video and thought it was a waste of time for the most part. Don't want to sidetrack the thread so will leave it at that.

Out of the selection you show, I use and really like the B&B lump. Also have a bag of their briquettes I haven't tried yet.

My go to for briquettes is Cowboy or Royal Oak 100% Natural. For lump, either B&B or Royal Oak.

It’s just another perspective. Not the Bible.

My running inventory is:
JD which I use and then the most
Occasional KPro
Occasional Cowboy oak briqs
Occasional B&B briqs
One bag of Char Logs left

Once I get through the non JD, I’d likely only keep KPro for LAS cooks in stock.

Looks like this distributor will not ship " fuel " to me........this included me removing from the cart....
B&B charcoal and
Pecan wood chunks
Raw wood is not able to ship to me and apparently is fuel........
no issues with my JD supplier......I will either go pick it up ( 2.5 hours away ) or find another supplier or just use JD like a champ.
Thanks for the input folks.

I switched from Kingsford Blue briquettes to B&B Oak (orange bag) briquettes about a year ago and have not looked back. It burns hotter, longer and cleaner. I use it in competitions and the backyard for both grilling and smoking meats.

My preference is JD XL, and when it goes on sale at wally world I restock.

I also like to keep some Oak lump around for beef cooks and Mesquite for chicken or fish. For mesquite I use Lazzari. I used buy 40 lb bags for about $20, yet the place that had these closed down about a year ago.

I can readily get Cowboy Oak or Cowboy Oak and it's OK. I've used FOGO Oak, B&B Oak, Rockwood, and they were all good. Some were lighter and burned a bit faster but I don't' really remember any standing out good or bad on any of them.

edit: I forgot, I've used royal oak in a pinch. It is never out of stock at Lowes. I think Royal Oak makes Big Green egg lump, and for both they light really easy but otherwise wasn't impressed.

I rarely use Briquettes. Maybe once or twice a year.

That video was about 40 minutes too long. I skipped to the end and was hoping he would have broken down the points he awarded by the categories he was measuring/ He mentioned 24 points and the winners were tied at 20.

I think if he showed the winners for each category, and then the final tally it would have been more valueable.
